I’m talking about the default menu music below (not the event/character specific themes):
I heard this in the OW2 beta for the first time and somehow it made its way into the final game. It has nothing to do with the original themes in Overwatch, different musical instruments different style different everything. Bland, boring and puts me in a depressed mood.
If I had to give it a title it would be “sad nostalgia” or something similar. In contrast the soundtracks in the original overwatch usually shared at least some components (melodies, some musical instruments) and radiated a sense of adventure and action that gave me the goosebumps.
I guess the audio team was on holiday and they decided to download a bland royalty free soundtrack from a public website to fill in the gaps. People usually use royalty free soundtracks similar to this one in low budget commercials.
It’s really sad if “sad nostalgia” is the best they can come up with in terms of lore. Even in that’s case this music doesn’t fit into the large collection of Overwatch soundtracks, it doesn’t share anything with them. And again, it’s unoriginal, generic and boring like most royalty free soundtracks.
Yeah, but some games get it right. Calling it “ambience” doesn’t make it better fit for the Overwatch theme.
I don’t have to be a musician or an expert to criticize something. It’s actually a bad thing when a non-expert can find obvious problems. Experts are usually much better at spotting even small imperfections that aren’t visible to the untrained eye or ear.
I will rant all day long, as long as I want. dum dum dum dadadum dadum…
it’s not the theme, it’s literally just ambience. it’s used to not annoy the player with too much sound during a time they’re either AFK or doing something in the background.
that’s why any music is stopped when you open the hero gallery or BP screen, it works.
really surprising that no one else misses the music that used to play on the character gallery or when you checked your stats . that lil short loop tune was heat. we took it for granted and now it’s gone
The problem isn’t that I miss the original one. The problem is that I find the current one annoying. Ambient music shouldn’t stick out and shouldn’t be annoying. They usually don’t even have melody like the current one.
