Rant about content creators

Incoming rant

Let me ask you a question. Why should I ( or anyone else ) give a flying immortality field what your favourite content creator says is OP or UP?

Why are we in this day-n-age where it’s not a question of actual evidence and statistics to determine if something is too powerful or too weak and is instead now down to how popular you are as a content creator.

“X” youtuber / twitch streamer says < Insert hero here > is OP.

They must be absolutely right!!! Who am I to argue with captain popular over there. Lets nerf them immediately!

Honestly. I don’t care if your favourite content creator has 10 subs or 10,000,000 Bliz should not pay them the slightest bit of attention.

Balance changes should always come from actual facts. Actual Statistics on how often and how effective a hero or ability is before any changes are made.

Even content creators have heroes they like and dislike. Doesn’t make them OP / UP.

My favorite content creators usually don’t care about balance and if they do sometimes they’re pepega takes

I form my own opinions from resources in the game itself and that alone. I do observe what happens in t500 games

Yea except Bap is statistically broken. There is no force on this earth that can convince me he’s a more popular character than mercy or Ana. Yet he’s still the most picked character of all 3 roles in gm.

Forming your own opinions takes effort, let’s just take the opinion from person X and hope I find some friends along the way.”

Stats and facts (what ever those might be) as the only basis for balance is not balance. You need always need to apply context, otherwise you could just create a bot to do the balance, spoiler alert - it wouldn’t be balanced at all.

I think people should be able to form their own opinions but at the same time we shouldn’t negate the fact that those content creators are often in GM and play certain heroes to their fullest potential.

Even with that in mind, they do and say things with bias like anyone else(usually with a more extreme bias since they know people are gonna back them up), and also have a reason to be so with having an audience to entertain.

Content creators are a generally poor source of unbiased takes

Sometimes I watch high ELO streamers just to learn from their gameplay, but I’ve never taken their opinions as irrefutable facts like a lot of people do

Yeah let’s not listen to GM/t500 content creators/streamers.

If we do dive will get buffed to the heavens and be absolutely broken.

Reminds me of this certain hero with gorgeous red hair that got a lot of hate when being bottom pick of their rank

stats can never show the true story on what is good and why it is good

He even is stated to be a better DPS than some actual DPS heroes, lol
Immo Field will always be broken until they completely rework it, because it acts like a second ult. His window is also OP af.

They’re all idiots. I firmly believe that every famous person is an irredeemable moron.

LANGUAGE!!! :triumph:

But also yes, I agree.

I do think that having content creators that pull polls and other means outside of their own opinion (i.e. what other community members, not just content creators, are saying) is valuable, and I do think they can add some additional perspective.

I would just never ever take what they say for a fact and parrot it. It’s fine to question it, it’s fine to add their perspective as a supplement to other forms of information that help shape an opinion, but acting as if a content creator cannot be biased is suboptimal.

The most op attribute isn’t intelligence. It’s charisma.

I mean they are called influencers for a reason.

Stats need to be put into context which is where blizz should at least try to pay attention to the higher ranked players.

But I agree, in general just listening to someone because they’re high ra ked or popular is dumb and you should take into account everyone’s biases.

And only care about their opinion if they give an actual reason. Don’t take someone just saying ‘something op’, unless they give actual reason and be open to discussion instead of just saying ‘well he’s gm so ur wrong’.

They are already doing that. Why do you think the balance is so bad?

It isn’t currently.

Actual balance changes should come from a well informed and experienced balance manager that watches many different content creators as well as drawing information from in game statistics, facts and other information to have a full and clear lay of the land.

It’s not that people can’t be right about the game if they aren’t gamemakers, you can have valid observations about anything even if you’re not an expert - you don’t need to be an expert on something to make an observation.

How accurate or relevant your observation is needs expertise to contextualize it and see it in the grander scheme of things.

Like - in business, a lot of times you have to do something that’s marginally difficult or inconvenient in the immediate moment, or for one portion of people, department, whatever - so that AT LARGE the company will do better. Warehouse workers need to scan barcodes now instead of just loading boxes so that inventory will be more streamlined; that sort of thing. It may be true that scanning the boxes does add more time to those workers and now they can only load 80 boxes a day instead of 90 - but the added benefit of having the inventory digitized so that it can be tracked by the head office and distributed by logistics is easily worth the loss of those 10 boxes. Someone working in the warehouse though might say ‘This is stupid, we’re loading less boxes than before, management is a buncha idiots!’

(which is to say, management are often idiots, but this is a hypothetical to teach a concept)

My whole long point is; don’t dismiss someone’s opinions or points just because they aren’t ‘official’, it’s literally chickening out of an actual discussion. Look at what they’re saying, address it, not their status.
