hello
I haven’t bothered much with competitive ranks. I’m still bronze, but I am baffled, as to why this season. I have ranked up twice and not ranked down yet, am still a level 5 bronze.
tonight, I was level 5 bronze, ranked up with 5 wins and 5 loses, to level 5 still.
what am I not understanding
hey brother… Man I feel like I’ve had to answer this one a million times on the forums. It’s not your fault at all as a new player / new to the OW2 ranking system. It’s blizzards confusing as hell ranking system.
the ranking system you see “bronze 5 / bronze 1 / gold 2 / plat 5 etc” is all a fake overlay to hide your actual SR level. The REAL ranking breakdown is this:
B5 = <1099 SR
B4 = 1100-1199
B3 = 1200-1299
B2 = 1300-1399
B1= 1400-1499
and so on… all the way up to
GM1 is 4500+
Notice each skill tier is 100 SR points difference right? Gain 100 sr and you go up to the next tier, like bronze 3 to bronze 2. (which is really 1200 to 1300 SR)
in a BALANCED (key word balanced) game, where both teams are equally matched with similar SR levels, you will gain or lose approximately 20 SR points… IN the new OW2 system you DON’T see this of course. So let’s say you win 5 games but lost 3 of them. That’s 5 games won (5x20=100 pts) and 3 games lost (3x20=60 pts) for a total of 100-60=40… You have a net gain of 40 SR! good job.
You can see how your net positive of 2 wins though is only 40 SR and not really enough to rank up if you were like 1210 before (bronze 3) you’d still be bronze 3 but at 1250 SR.
The horribly unfortunate thing for you in your current rank of bronze 5 is you’re kinda in bronze 5 hell. SR can go down to about 500 SR (which is really where you find people are literally losing ON PURPOSE… the trolls are the only people this actually low in rank, no one is this bad by accident I promise you) but you might be around 700-1000 SR but look how crazy that is… there is somewhere in 600 SR points of room for you to be stuck in when every other rank is only 100 points. Do you see what I mean?
You may very well be as low as 700 SR, and need to have a net positive of 20 wins before you ever see a rank up. not 20 wins and 5 losses, not 20 wins and 2 losses, but seriously 20 wins for +400 SR points of equally matched games. Losses will only mean you need to win another game just to cancel the loss out, but you still need to do your 20.
So is there any good news? Yes. Fortunately at your rank the potential for you to RAPIDLY improve your game play is massive. People at this skill level (i mean no offense) horrible at the game. Eventually when and as you improve not all of your games will be equal matches. eventually you will get games against a gold player (think 2000 SR vrses your 800 SR). Odds are you will lose, but in those cases you will gain MUCH more SR for you wins.
As you improve at the game you might find some times you will lets say win 5 but lose 4 and STILL rank DOWN. That’s gonna be cuz you lost games against people you really should have won…
The REAL issue with comp is that you have to have this explained to you on the forums by breaking badger and that is unfortunate as hell. The system before was intuitive, obvious, and anyone could see with their own eyes exactly how good at the game they were and why they were where they were at if they paid attention and looked at the numbers.
Now everything is hidden behind these weird rank tiers and whats worse is you wont ever know which games are the ones I mentioned with a skill diff.
Imagine you are 2000 SR (gold 5) and you match into a lobby that CLAIMS it’s a gold 3 lobby (2250 SR). You might think, oh that’s not too bad a diff, I can compete still. The truth is the other team is probably all plat 5 (2500) which is a fairly significant jump in skill but you can’t really know that. In the old days it would just straight up tell you the exact SR match up.
Anyways hope this helps. Hopefully they get their heads out of their but’ts soon and go back to SR.
thank you very much. your explanation was very informative and explains their ranking system well. I did not know that is how it was done
as I didn’t play OW1 and started playing OW2 a week or two after it started because of hearing about it from my son and a couple people i work with (20 years younger than me) and was intrigued. I qualified for comp near the beginning of season 2, and liked the CTF comp games lore so. I started playjng more durring this current season 4 to try to rank up, my simple goal is to make it to silver, I don’t think I’m good enough to rank any higher, as i have limited time to play and ok skill, and as I mentioned, the ranks weren’t making seance to me
