I guess I’ll add my voice to the throng: the ranking and matchmaking system makes ZERO sense. In OW 1, I was a:
- low gold tank,
- low silver dps,
- low-mid plat support.
In Season 1 (or 0, whatever), I placed, and then climbed, as follows:
- Tank: Silver 4, climbed to Silver 1
- Damage: Silver 5, only played 2-3 matches after
- Support: Gold 4, climbed to Plat 3 as of Monday (day before S2)
Yesterday (day after S2), I logged in to find my rank had decayed as follows:
- Tank: Silver 4 (down 3 to where I placed in S1)
- Damage: Silver 5 (no change, exactly where I was in S1)
- Support: Gold 4 (dropped SIX RANKS to where I placed in S1)
I have no idea what is going on with the rank system. I had no decay on my unplayed role, but dropped 6 WHOLE TIERS on my main role, for all my roles to finish exactly where I placed in S1. That’s not “rank decay” - that’s rank RESET.
Then, to top it off, I just finished a game of competitive Eichenwalde where the enemy Zen was popping off. Fortunately, he has a public profile: He peaked last season at MASTER 5 and finished DIAMOND 2 with 120 games. His current rank? PLAT 4.
The matchmaking seems completely bugged. It would make sense for me to play with high-golds to low-diamonds in a VERY broad MM net, but high-diamond to low-Master? No. This is bad. The best I can fathom is that it’s operating off of current SR (not MMR), and I’ve climbed high enough to play with low-plats. But Zen was NOT a low-plat player. It’s extremely frustrating.
Please fix this.

I’m not going to pretend I know everything but from what I have observed, most people’s ranks dropped from OW1 to OW2 which explains the first drop. The season 2 drop isn’t actually a drop at all. Seemingly they just wanted to get rid of placements and hence lowered everyone’s visible rank to avoid people keeping their rank without playing. In reality, your hidden rank is still the same and with every rank update you’ll be guided back towards your real rank.
The S1 drop, while unnecessary I believe, is understandable. But the S2 drop is both unintelligible and unnecessary. If we are to work our way to our True SR, as you say, then wouldn’t my True SR be Plat 3, which I climbed to over the course of 9 weeks? No tier drops, spending a couple rank-ups at the same tiers (so it’s not like I rocketed way past where I should’ve been), it all points to my current SR being Plat 3. But instead it drops me 600 SR - 6 tiers. BUT ONLY ON THE ROLE I ACTUALLY PLAY! My barely-touched Damage rank didn’t change at all! I would understand that one decaying, because I haven’t played a dps game in weeks. But instead, my Support rank goes from P3 on Monday to G4 on Tuesday while my Damage stays the same. Because that makes sense somehow.
And ranking up won’t be easy, either, because while my first placement will go to G1, the next two will be P5, then 4 at P4, etc. because the SR change is so minimal when you’re that close to your rank. But now instead of slowly climbing away in higher-quality matches, I’m slowly crawling back to where I was in lower-quality matches.
And no, I don’t believe them when they say their matchmaking is actually working, because I had a high-diamond/low-masters player with 120 games last season in the same competitive game. I shouldn’t be seeing that guy until I hit D5, P1 at least. If their MMR is working, their SR is garbage and needs to be completely rebuilt.
Sorry if this comes across a little harshly. I’m frustrated at the devs, not you.

It’s manipulation. They want you to grind more till you get back to your real rank. It’s all crap. Just another tactic in order to manipulate players to play their game more.

Really bad decision. Gold 1 to silver 1. Plat 5 to gold 5. The fanbase hated this years ago when you got hate for it and they hate it now. Why bring back the same thing you removed because the fanbase gave you severe backlash? No one wants this. Its pointless.
Giving me a silver icon when im plat is meaningless. My mmr is still plat. Im still playing plat players. Just show me as plat.
You have to be braindead to do this again.
