Randomly lagging out

Every so often I lag out and it’s incredibly obnoxious. I can’t figure out why this happens. I also play PS4 and have never had a problem.

This video is an example of what happens. There is usually a delay on my end and then my screen freezes and a few seconds later I’m back in the game. Here I go to peak the corner to make sure hammond was gone and I end up off the map…
And just to be clear, this is not what I see on my end, it just what the replay shows. When my character starts to coast off to the right all I see is a frozen screen and when it unfreezes I am dead.

Any input is greatly appreciated thanks!

Hey Honker,

It sounds like there could be some packet loss or latency spikes causing weird issues, like heros coasting. Have you tried any of these steps?

If so, let’s get a WinMTR test so we can take a closer look at what’s happening. However, I would recommend avoiding competitive matches to prevent any penalties or rating lost while troubleshooting.

If you are on a wireless connection have you tried to connect to the router via Ethernet? If so and you are still disconnecting. You may need to try to run a WinMTR test. Note this requires a Windows Computer connected to the same local network in order to do this.

  1. Download WinMTR
  2. Unzip the WinMTR.zip file to the Desktop.
  3. Open the WinMTR folder and select the 64 bit version.
  4. Run the WinMTR.exe
  5. Type the IP address you want to trace in the “Host” field. To get the correct IP you will actually need to open up the game and go Practice Vs AI or Quick Play and if you are on PC hit Ctrl+Shift+N and it will bring up the ingame network diagnostic graph, or go to Video > Options > Display Network Performance Graph if you are on any platform including Console. In the top left corner is the IP address you want to run WinMTR to.
note When looking at the IP it will show up ingame as something like 12.34.56.78:12345. You will want to leave the last 5 digits and the colon at the end off and the IP you want to use is just the 12.34.56.78
  6. Once you notice the connection issue while playing, play for about 6 more minutes, minimize the game and click on “Stop”.
  7. Click on “Copy text to clipboard”, then return to this forum thread.
  8. Type two sets of four squiggly lines and then paste the contents of the WinMTR test between: ~~~~ Paste WinMTR Test Results Here ~~~~

Honker,

Looks like you’re on Verizon FIOS, which uses ipv6 so we can’t see exactly where the failure is in your test. It does look like you’re dropping packets somewhere between your house and our servers, though. (Italicized below)

There aren’t a whole ton of things that can cause this to happen on a console, but since it’s happening from your PC as well - it could be your router or the connection path between our servers and your house. Can you try power cycling your router, and if that fails, connect your ps4 to the router by ethernet cable if it’s on wifi?

I have tried power cycling my router more than once with no luck. And to be clear, this doesn’t happen when I play on ps4 which is why I don’t understand why it happens when I play on PC. It’s the same internet connection and both are connected by an Ethernet cable.

Ahhh okay, sorry, I misread that. Interesting thing to test - if you take the ethernet cord out of the back of your PS4 and plug it into your PC, does it fix the issue? If so, you know the problem is either with that ethernet cable or a port or setting on your router. It still MIGHT be a router setting even if this fails, but this could confirm the problem.

What kind of router setting could it be?

Honker,

Typically it’d either be Quality of Service (QoS), Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), or something like that. You can try disabling those (look up the router information online if you need a guide for how to find them in the router firewall.) It’s also a possible sign of a dying router. Did swapping ports/cables happen to help?

No luck disabling UPnP or swapping ports/cables. Like I said, no issue on PS4 only PC so I don’t know how it could be the router going

Honker,

I can’t say for certain what that’d be either - but at this point we’ve hit the limit of what we can reasonably test on the forums. You can try submitting a ticket and working with our tech specialists via ticket - we might be able to find software or something like that with an MSInfo. Beyond that it may be time to swap that router out.
