Hello all.
Recently I have been having really bad ping problems with overwatch only. None of my other games are having this problem and my ping is super smooth in it. Overwatch has gotten to the point of where I either lag super hard or just get kicked from comp matches randomly and get banned when it is nothing on my end. I have done everything suggested to fix it and it is getting super frustrating at this point. If anyone has any ideas because I’m all ears and I have never had Overwatch issues before this and have always been an avid player but I am tired of not being able to play the game or get banned when I have played on xbox and pc since day one.
Thanks guys.
Is this on Xbox or PC (your last sentence is a little confusing). Right now presuming this is on PC, can you try to run a WinMTR test for us?
WinMTR instructions:
- Download WinMTR from Download WinMTR-v092.zip (WinMTR) (Console players need a Windows Desktop Computer connected to the same network as their console to do this.)
- Unzip the WinMTR.zip file to the Desktop.
- Open the WinMTR folder and select the 32 or 64 bit version. Choose whichever one corresponds to your version of Windows.
- Run the WinMTR.exe
- Type the IP address you want to trace in the “Host” field. To get the correct IP you will actually need to open up the game and go Practice Vs AI or Quick Play and if you are on PC hit Ctrl+Shift+N and it will bring up the ingame network diagnostic graph, or go to Video > Options > Display Network Performance Graph if you are on any platform including Console. In the top left corner is the IP address you want to run WinMTR to.
note When looking at the IP it will show up ingame as something like 12.34.56.78:12345. You will want to leave the last 5 digits and the colon at the end off and the IP you want to use is just the 12.34.56.78 - Once you notice the connection issue while playing, play for about 6 more minutes, minimize the game and click on “Stop”.
- Click on “Copy text to clipboard”, then return to this forum thread.
- Type two sets of four squiggly lines and then paste the contents of the WinMTR test between:

Greetings again, thanks for the results, so I do believe your router is causing some issues, your starting average latency in your home network is 45 milliseconds when it should be no more than 5 in most cases. The worst reported ping rates such an overall pattern of bandwidth overload spikes. Please note this spiking latency can cause disconnection in online games like Overwatch but may not appear as an overall disconnection when accessing other web applications on your devices.
Please take the time to work through these troubleshooting steps:
- Reset your network devices to make sure your router hasn’t become flooded with data.
- If you’re using a wireless connection, optimize your internet connection to rule out a connection issue.
- Check your network configuration to find any issues with your firewall, router, or port settings.
I noticed that in your original post that you are a both an Xbox and PC player, please note as of this moment, Xbox Live is having service issues so you will want to focus on testing on the PC platform if possible.
Sorry I wasn’t was more specific it is on pc. I have never had problems before but the game has been super buggy lately while nothing else on my pc is having problems. I am constantly getting overwatch only problems and when the game crashes it says its a blizzard problem.
Can you be a bit more specific about this, if possible please type word for word what error messages you are receiving. If you are getting this error dialog, then that is not a connection issue but more likely a software or hardware issue with your PC.
On top of the ping, issue that is the error I keep getting. I will be in the middle of a game and that will just randomly come up. Sorry for not being specific its hard to describe over text haha
Yo @wyomingMyst myself and many others are experiencing insane ping spikes in Overwatch, and you guys are just suggesting these generic troubleshoot steps that do nothing. I suggest your team looks into their servers for stability issues because no way its on the players’ end
Wyoming and myself don’t work at Blizzard. There aren’t any known reported issues with the servers, and we both play pretty often like you all do.
Hey there,
Did we already attempt the troubleshooting suggested by WyomingMyst? I noticed that 50% of the average latency (45ms avg of the 83ms total avg) is happening between the computer and the home network. This means that it takes as much time for the data to go form the PC to the router as it does to go across the country to our servers! This is very abnormal and will need to be resolved before we can provide additional troubleshooting.
Keep in mind “Disconnected form the Blizzard Servers” and similar errors mean the local client is having trouble connecting online and does not indicate a problem with the servers.
Hope the info helps. Cheers!
Been having the same issue as well. Just got hit with a 20hr suspension because it put me in the game, I could see party members typing, but I couldn’t join the game. Said I couldn’t connect to the game, even though OW was connected. Seems to be an issue on OW servers end.
