Random hero button

What the title says.

A random hero button would be cool, for example, if you’re playing quick play but don’t know what to pick.

Also random damage, tank, and support buttons could be added. Like if you’re playing comp, and you have to fill the healer role, so your team says you can pick any support you want, but you can’t decide which one.

They could be represented by ? signs, or they could be the little logos above roles (for role specific ones).

In quickplay maybe. But in comp no.
You need to plan and create a good team composition with high synergies. If you leave this to hazard you’re not taking it serious enough.
“Blah blah it’s just a game”. Yes it is but it is competetive. You should always try your best to win. And there will ALWAYS be a best choice.
That choice varies depending on map / enemies / your team but it is there.

I still like the idea though. I have some moments in which I really don’t care what hero to play. So maybe this could be implemented into an arcade mode or as a said maybe quickplay.

I like the idea of a random button, maybe one for each of the roles.
I agree that it probably shouldn’t be in comp though, but the other modes would be fun.

I remember when I used to play Gunbound and you could only get the Dragon/Unicorn mounts if you used random, was fun.

Hmm, maybe “Auto Select” would be more appropriate. Let the system select a character that actually fits with whatever your team has selected so far (reasonably achieved via ML), or essentially random if you’re the first one to pick anything.

That way you don’t end up randomly picking attack Torb to supplement your team’s Widow Hanzo Ashe McCree composition or something.

The game already sort of does this

This might be my Mystery Heroes bias talking, but i really want this too. As its own button it could even let you re-spawn as another random hero. Before this sounds too hair-brained it would be possible with the right Ui element to remind the player they’re about to switch upon spawning, but considering it would be an opt-in feature i think that might work. Sorta in the same vein as Ana’s confirm nano Ui but for the deathcam screen. So once you’ve found a hero you like (but died nonetheless) you will see the random Ui advising you and follow some prompt there to cancel and remain whoever on respawning.

Just a side note it would fit in so nice as just one last portrait box with all the heroes, just picturing a “?” instead of a face as OP mentioned.

So why not just mystery hero where random hero is expected? Random hero, especially if it switches after every death in normal game would just give people even more reason to whine about throwing and cause unnecessary drama.

It showed up as i was about to write a new one for ow2. Both? both

Sometimes the limited options for support and tank make it trivial sometimes, i’d rather the game picks one for me and then at least i have the sense of accomplishment in making that work. Still, 80% of the time i know what character i want to play. This would be icing on the cake but it’s a heirloom feature in many many games.

Great idea, except it’s not because picking and counterpicking the right hero for a certain situation was a big part of OW1. For OW2 yeah, sure, the beta is hardly playable anyway with the “cool new reworks” blasting everything apart and being overtuned through the roof together with a handful of heroes (soldier…).

After a few days of beta I am terrible sore of the “haha some chaos” gameplay though.
(And smart, tactical play is impossible at this stage because as mentioned above some things are broken in ways it’s not possible to counterplay them.)

On a very painful sidenote: WHO AM I SUPPOSED TO THROW MY SECOND SHIELD AT AS ZARYA? If ANYONE is in front of me both they and I don’t do their job and it can hardly be a smart idea to force the only tank to 180° turn everytime the second ability shall be used.
