I have been getting random disconnects and for the last 5 months or so. Today i got suspended for getting disconnected, something that is out of my control. Since this started happening I have rebooted my PC ,my router, I made my PC priority on the router ( so i have bandwidth when playing ) I am hard wired in. I have even installed on a separate drive a new OS and installed everything as if it was a new machine. stilling getting dropped. But I have noticed that while on a teams call or teams video meeting Battlenet will reconnect randomly but the video call will not lose connection or pixelate or freeze as well as discord. This has happened to both myself and friends while playing.
I do feel strongly that it might be on the server end of things. It might be an incorrect MTU setting on the server end and packets getting dropped. I just know with 5 people on discord and one of us gets dropped but not on discord or on another application it hard to see how this might be an end user issue.
The game is very sensitive to packet loss due to anti-cheat measures, whereas things like Discord or Zoom are not — so comparing the two isn’t a good way to measure your connection.
So if 5 people are playing in the match and one is disconnected but not the others, that would point to an issue with the their connection to the server, not the server itself. Otherwise, everyone in the match would disconnect and the match would cease to exist.
Unfortunately, Blizzard started hiding their server IPs like other game development studios. This means you can no longer run direct connection tests to them. However, you could do some research and ping/traceroute your local Google datacenter (whichever one you’re connecting to for Overwatch).
So, if the game is sensitive to drop packets, then wouldn’t it be better have an update that set the MTU to the specific size packets to help prevent drop packet, as with more hops the greater chance of having lost packets.
So the reason why I bring up discord teams meetings with video is somewhat of a measure of a connection is because that’s one of the simplest ways to ensure that local network it’s still connected and is able to go through the gateway to connect to the ISP then to go to the World Wide Web. Meaning most likely it’s not the users equipment causing it to drop or disconnect from the game ( As I know that other applications use different protocols to transfer data and/or sensitive to drop packets. )
I’m a volunteer, so I can’t comment on how Blizzard chooses packet size or what their future plans are.
That said, you’re comparing your route to Discord or Teams to the route you take to the Overwatch server — which isn’t helpful for troubleshooting. It’s like comparing your drive to the grocery store to the drive you make to the dentist. They both involve leaving your house, but they are not likely the same route or endpoint.
I change the setting to Auto negotiate to 100 mb full duplex and it seems that has somewhat help the issue minus every now and again I have times where there is a connection lag for a second or two but doesn’t disconnected from the game. I suggested that my friends try it as well to see if that help’s from then disconnecting. but if it does then the issue would the packet size and/or dropped packets.
So, to add to your analogy with the grocery store and dentist look at it this way, My car the computer needs to go to one of the 2 locations. From there I hit an intersection/ traffic light( the datacenter ) light. Left leads me to the grocery store right leads me to the dentist if I had right in return without hitting traffic there’s no issue. But if I was to go left to hit the grocery store preceded to hit traffic while going there and then hitting traffic on the way back to the traffic light then traffic would be simulation of packets getting dropped. So, I do agree to looking into the data center, I think it would be a good idea for Blizzard to analyze the traffic leaving their servers heading to the data center and return to the user who’s playing. Because I could be connecting to the nearest data center but in essence your server could be further out then what other server from IE discord teams or Zoom, and distance can cause issues with time outs that can cause the disconnect even more so with what you stated in an earlier post with cheaters. But we must look at it from both sides and the data center could also be delegating traffic being if it’s Google to prioritize their own data first and others second which could also lead to issues as I described before.
But as a volunteer I understand that you cant talk about somethings but your input is helpful when relaying back to Blizzard to find a resolution for issue such as this. But i am grateful that you are responding and assisting with this issue,
The issue could be that you’re running on the absolute minimum connection speed (100Mbps) that meets the broadband requirements for Overwatch. The FCC currently defines broadband as a minimum of 100Mbps download and 20Mbps upload.
So I haven’t dropped a game but the lag is getting to the point that some game are even and fun or everyone is lagging and now more random people are stating it in chat. and this is after rebooting my machine and router.
