quickplay used to be that semi-casual gamemode where people didn’t try too hard, but didn’t take it to easily either and didn’t leave as much.
But I get it, leaving currently can be a necessary evil in counterwatch/silencewatch(no vc) and if the matchmaker decides to stack up a team of random new/mid players with one or two high ranks against a 2-5 stack of sweating players regularly to get a 50/50 split winrate overall, the disaster is almost unavoidable.
It either feels like you don’t have to do anything because the opponents are way below your skill, or the opposite way, it feels like you can’t do anything, no matter how hard you try and how good your scoreline is compared to the rest of your team. Rarely, it’s what I call a balanced clownfiesta, where the good players on each team race for the most kills. the outcome of the match is RNG.
I get that quickplay is supposed to be a casual gamemode, but it shouldn’t be like a skirmish or practice range mode, it should still be about teamplay and fun, not necessarily winning, but getting spawncamped or spawncamping back isn’t. I don’t care if I win or lose, I just wanna have fun.
It leads me to the hypothesis that overwatch is on a downwards trend in terms of player count. backfills are usually terrible or brand new players, they need to fill those spots quickly so it’s going to be a newb or bot 99% of the time. There’s pretty much only sweats left or new players, the casual playerbase has shrunk to a very few amount of people and that’s how u get those results. I hope it’ll get better again. Honestly just scrap one of the two competitive gamemodes (5v5 or 6v6) and replace it with stadium, there’s just too many gamemodes, not enough players. I’m tired of seeing the same players in every lobby everyday, there is hardly ever a name I haven’t seen yet in any given match I play, in both 5v5 and 6v6.
quickplay lost its integrity when competitive ranked mode lost its identity.
Free 2 play is what caused all this. if you look at games with ranked modes and they go f2p. most people dump ranked play and go play quick matches because savvy players know ranked means nothing now, due to smurffing.
aaron really ruined this game when he decided to do what he has done to the game liek when this game was in control of jeff kaplan this game was winning awards
brother we ain’t talking about OW1 specifically. most of these issuses where added during the lifespan of OW2. OW2 had plenty players in the first 6 seasons then it fell of real hard. then they added some good and some bad things and the game spiked a little bit again: as good as the addition of perks were, I still can’t believe we still have the season 9 changes.
maybe they could just keep 5v5 in form of stadium, remove the role lock and give every hero, including rein the ability to be a healer or of any role, also a mei tank build could be fun
Backfills have been terrible recently because there is zero matchmaking for them now. The game needs to spend more time searching for backfills, especially during the hero selection phase where people are most likely to leave and that time loss isn’t as detrimental.
This is a big problem, at least for me. When playing tank or CTF, I often see unranked matchmaking that is 4 or 5 ranks (not divisions, ranks!) wide. Bronze to diamond, silver to master, peak gold to Top 500. If I want to win or make the matches close, I usually have to hard carry and sweat; my team will get rolled if I don’t, and sometimes they get rolled even with me giving my best effort. And to make it worse, my metal rank teammates will occasionally complain, flame me, and/or throw because the skill difference is so wide that they effectively have no understanding of how to play the game (no offense to metal rank players).
I’d love to just focus on what I’m doing, try something new, or be silly in the unranked modes. Unfortunately, the wide matchmaking means I have to sacrifice my teammates’ experience in the matches to do so.
