“Overwatch is an intense and competitive multiplayer shooter. We have millions of players in our game every day enjoying it. And we’d like to not just provide more of that experience to them but also improve it. When I use the term competitive, I don’t just mean playing Ranked, even Quick Play is demanding and sweaty.”
So in blizzard eyes, qp is still a competitive game mode.
I mean yeah, it’s kind of obvious with how toxic QP is, especially since OW2.
The question should be if it should be competitive, not if it is or not. And I’d argue no, it shouldn’t.
But hey, the games industry is shifting away from casual pvp games barring ones aimed at children so it’s just par for the course. Everything has to be an uber competitive esport(which is ironic considering the decline of owl) or it’s not allowed to exist anymore.
This is the exact toxic mentality that this sort of mindset has caused.
Gone are the days where people were casual and focused on their own play, now everyone hyper focuses on their teammates, leading to toxicity in every game.
I completely agree that Quick Play is competitive and the people who abandon, afk, ragequit, etc are the absolute worst part of Overwatch, whether it’s Comp or Quick Play.
If you want to play a drop-in shooter, play a single player game, or a solo queue battle royale where people are happy to have you join and leave.
Overwatch has never been a casual oriented game. It’s founded on direct teamwork like an actual sport, not loose teamwork where everybody just exists at the same time doing their own thing like most shooters out there.
Agreed. Fortnite sucks imo, but if thats the game you want, go have a blast. This is not that game.
My take: how is this bad? I don’t get it. Don’t people want lobbies that try? Don’t people want to get better against you know… other players trying to get better?
What is the point of defining what is competitive and what is not, when they are not capable of providing an effective matchmaker to create good matches where this competitiveness can be expressed in an environment made for that, instead of an actual environment designed to disgust ppl to play and to scare them away.
As usual they hide the real problems by trying to make look elsewhere.
This could be fixed by having a better menu system IMO.
The Play menu should just list out every mode on small cards, without size differences, have like 12 modes all in there - without the inherent negativity/noobitivity of “Arcade” modes (“They’re not REAL overwatch, and you’re a noob if you play them!”, is what Arcade implies). Get rid of that bias.
Just have like a 4x6 grid with rows:
Quick Play Row - Role Queue, Open Queue, Mystery Heroes, Deathmatch
Arcade Row - 4-6 cards, whatever cycling of the week
Missions - Placeholder row for PVE content that doesn’t really exist yet
Competitive - Role Queue, Open Queue
By putting all the modes on the same screen not only do you remove the complicated finding what you want problem (which I still struggle with sometimes), but you also remove the inherent bias against the Drop-In “For Fun” modes - which would probably become a lot more popular.
Additionally, Quick Play should be changed to “Unranked” and Competitive should be changed to “Ranked”, which would both clarify the difference better - and make “Competitive” sound slightly less terrifying to beginners.
They can call a mode with the name “super-super-super-super-competitive”, if a majority of players decide that this is the main place to be a mess, then it will be a mess.
actually not at all overwatch was build on the same principale as tf2. just have fun shooting stuff and let the chaos unfold. the esports dream turned overwatch competitve but at its core it really isn’t
its fine if one: comp was good and 2: quick play was dominated by a less toxic less competitive player base. sadly blizzard chooses to balance the game for that exact player base. the sore losers. the ragequiters. the teamblamers. the i must always win mentality. the make others suffer mentality. thats the current dominant player base. theres a reason why in ow1 bronze was the most common rank yet now those same bronze players are playing in gold.
Let’s be real: any game that involves winning or losing is “competitive,” because players or teams are competing. I checked out the blog the OP is referring to and they’ve omitted important context:
That intensity and fast pace are inherent to most modes in our game, and we love that!
IMO they’re just saying the game is hectic, no one ever said that means we can’t have fun with it.
did they forget that there is ranked and unranked like unranked is for people who lack the skills to qualify for comp like maybe at best i would be bottom end of bronze or maybe not even a bronze
