Whats your opinion on games like OW doing things like pride events in game and selling pride merch? Do you think its an overall good thing for you or does it make you feel like you’re being used for virtue signal points? Do you think this is helping normalize pride in the world or does it make you feel like you’re getting special treatment for just being you?
Every year now OW rolls out the red carpet for pride and I can’t help but wonder if this makes some lgbt people feel uncomfortable. Do you think this is all just performative? I’m curious to see what everyone’s opinion is on this. I personally don’t think this is doing any good and sets an unnecessary divide between players based on something personal to them who are just all trying to play a game and have fun together.

It’s whatever. Corporate Pride is an established meme and nobody that I know takes it very seriously.
Are pride flag profile items welcome? sure, why not. Does my group pick a designated color every june so that we form a rainbow on the victory screen? yes.
Do we joke about the “Overwatch-Sexual” pride icon? Also yes.
How we have fun with Pride doesn’t detract from what’s serious about Pride and doesn’t mean we love corpos, even the ones with fellow Gays visibly working there.

Sadly, Pride is still something that is needed throughout the world for awareness. Blizzard barely does anything for Pride, so I don’t really count them? All they did was release a purple recolor Soldier skin, an icon, and a singular map with rainbow crosswalks. It doesn’t even have the confetti this year. Lmfao
If people think this is a red carpet, I want to know what people think actual effort is. This “event” is the most unnoticeable event in all OW history. Lol I don’t want, need, and never asked for this event, but it’s so minimal, it could not exist and nobody would notice.
But anyway, I don’t think corporations feeding off Pride is the worst thing if it’s done sensibly. One of my friends was beaten and hospitalized less than 2 years ago in Chicago for being gay. He did NOTHING to provoke it. He went to a gas station, bought some snacks, and left. The guys followed him and beat him while calling him the F slur.
Hate against the LGBTQ+ community still exists and it’s more prevalent today than a few years ago. LGBTQ+ hate has basically been the POPULAR thing to do amongst politicians the last few years.
Edit: I want to add that I am very grateful they did anything at all. They didn’t have to, but it’s also very minimal. Idk why anyone actually cares since it is so minimal.

They’ve done way more than this. There are dozens of pride themed nameplates and banners. Several characters have been made lgbt (years after their release for some of them). They’ve done comics telling story about lgbt relationships of characters. They do several social media posts about pride and also release a statement about pride every year around this time telling you how much they care. They have a lot of pride merch on their website. I’m probably missing something but yea they do go out of their way to really try to send the message they care about pride.
This is a problem affecting much more people in the world than just lgbt people but pride seems to get the special treatment in a video game for some reason.

I mean there’s probably an element of that but there are definitely also people on the team who really care. Especially to keep putting in effort in today’s climate where they could kill off Venture in lore and it’d attract more players than the event

tbh, i think the more you push “awareness” the more you create hate among those who just dont support lgbt
people who don’t support lgbt today, won’t do it tomorrow just because games “supports” it
kinda like a snake biting its own tail X)
people who hate will forever hate, nothing you can do about it, and the rest of the people do not mind, as long as its not forced onto them

I actually never knew about the Pride merch! That’s cool!
But to add onto your conversation about LGBT not being the only ones, we’re not! Many movements exist and there’s a lot of the world still left to repair from all forms of hatred. Black history month exists for similar awarenesses! Did you know that in the health care field, minorities tend to receive less/worse care? Even if unintentional, statistics show.

They’ll do what’s most profitable for them. I’m personally pretty jaded about the fact that they’ll just hide the pride to sell their product in countries that don’t support it, but I don’t expect them to show true solidarity.
If Blizzard actually bit the bullet and gave those countries the finger and refused to compromise on their narrative for the comfort of bigots, they’d earn a lifelong fan.

Absolutely agree. There’s a difference between awareness and just downright annoyance for people. There’s a healthy way of going about it, hahaha.
One of my friends told me before that if people don’t accept him, then they need to be forced…
that is NOT the way to go about it and will cause more hatred and resentment. Lmao

World is well awared , doesn’t change a bit
Of course it’s performative. It’s a for profit company, it’s all performing. Do you think they keep this game running out of the goodness of their hearts?
Also, you clearly hate Pride, so just say it. Don’t hide behind fake concern trolling. You don’t care if gay people like the Pride event or not.
(For the record tho: yes, I do like the Pride event and hope it continues every year).

You can lead a horse to water. It’s up to the horse to drink.
Awareness for any given event isn’t inherently bad. It depends on how it is operated. While I do believe it is still necessary, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its flaws. There’s a lot of the LGBTQ+ community damaging our own reputation from it too.

And get punished for it immediately. Good advices you’re giving here, pal

If the thing he’s being coy about is punishable, then maybe he shouldn’t be trying to find coy ways to say it

What kind of sense does this even make?
It has been such a relief to witness the backlash and pendulum swing against pride month.
We get it you like different things, now go live your life. Have some humility and just be a person among people, why the need to stand out like a poisonous toad 24/7

I have mixed feelings toward rainbow capitalism, but it’s unfortunately clear prominent support and representation is still sorely needed and we’re always at risk of backsliding even in the most LGBTQ friendly countries. Even if it’s just for money, support is still support and an improvement on the past.
In the case of Overwatch, well, it’s kinda obvious Team 4 is filled with at least allies and likely many LGBTQ members too. I don’t have any doubt the devs are entirely genuine in their support of Pride even if Blizzard itself is more excited to make sales. And it’s hardly like Blizzard over does it with the Pride stuff.
Now, I’d personally rather see representation primarily developed through lore and actual in-game relationship building. But eh, lack of lore building isn’t a problem unique to the gays.

look at the World map, and circle every place in the world where it’s illegal to be cis Strait person… in Yellow, then circle all the places in the world where it’s illegal to be LGBTQ+.
Then see how stupid this statement is.
