So here’s kind of an unofficial poll of sorts. What kinds of various and specific types of toxicity would you guys consider genuinely toxic and just simple competitive banter.
In short, what’s the difference between snowflake toxicity and real harmful toxicity? Snowflake toxicity being the things that most gamers do or say that that some people find offensive (and therefore shouldn’t be gaming…and such as tbagging, “diff”, and casual competitive banter…that’s from my perspective anyway).
An analogy I like to use, is what kinds of things would you consider 5 mph over the speed limit…and things of that nature…jaywalking etc…what is the line between those things and straight up the real criminal activity (stealing cars, killing, robbery, etc.).
Cheaters and genuine toxic people seem to get away with too much these days, where those “5 mph over the speed limit” things get reported and action taken on their accounts immediately. There’s not a single person I know that I’ve played with that doesn’t do or say those kinds of things. Literally everyone does, yet it seems only select people have it happen to them…the more genuinely innocent ones. Sorry for the long post, wish I had a potato to show.
I’m sorry, what’s the poll here? Is it “Am I wrong? Y/N”. I would tick Yes, thank you.
Your analogy to the 5mph is just incorrect, as you’re not insulting, belittling or offending anyone (at least in the general case) when doing that. It’s “just” a potential increase in risk of accidents, and it’s also dependent on the context (which, sadly, many speed limits ignore), such as the amount of traffic, road type, weather conditions, etc.
Not to mention that going “just a bit over the speed limit” can warrant you a fine nevertheless. So even if your analogy was ok and we were applying it, you could still get punished by it
Don’t focus your attention on my terminology, it’s an unofficial poll, meaning “what does everyone think?”, without actually creating a poll template. lol…and I never said I was right or wrong, this is…what does everyone think?”
I find getting tbagged to be exciting, gives the match a little life. I respect that others are more prone to frustration towards that. Don’t care either way
VC is not a thing anymore in this game, even before this Matrix stuff. Overwatch is incredibly popular with LGBT+ people, and they prefer to be silent for obvious reasons. Also, in EU and South America, people speak many languages. So… it’s better not talk.
I get tbagging and spray on my body almost every game when I lose to an Ana or whatever support/dps, but I don’t even care, I don’t feel anything to even bother with such a childish move. I’m playing a game and I have to kill you to win, right? But people take this stuff too much seriously.
There is no difference between them and making it seem like there is would just be disingenuous. If you don’t accept one kind, then you shouldn’t accept any.
That’s why I think it’s better to let people say whatever and have an “opt-out” option for people who can’t handle it. There’s already a filter in place inside the game that acts as a middle ground for the two sides.
I have never liked that word in the first place. “Toxic”. What does it mean? Is everything I don’t like toxic? I’m not saying the concept is bs in its entirety, like toxic people irl exist, toxic relationships are a thing and are pretty well defined, but in video games it’s odd. I wouldn’t call a guy insulting me irl “toxic”, I’d call them a jerk. Uh, so yeah, rant over, I guess. But I assume this wishy-washy nature of the word leads to all the drama of “ gg is toxic”, “ no it isn’t”.
There are things others say I find insulting and things I don’t find insulting. That’s it. If something is so insulting that I think it shouldn’t ever be said, like slurs and stuff like that, I’ll report. Diff is obviously usually meant as an insult but it’s very tame, ez kind of but not really (competitive banter, I’d say). Wouldn’t report for either of course.
Personally, I’m okay with a little “tactical crouching” and minor banter with the enemy (not that I do those things myself (except with friends), but I’m not too bothered when other people do).
Saying stuff like “ez” and “-diff” I find pretty childish, but I don’t bother reporting it cause it’s pretty innocuous all things considered imo.
Stuff like this I’m very strongly against;
(Admittedly that last one is kind of on me I suppose. I should know better than to accept friend requests from random people, but nonetheless, it’s not very pleasant receiving comments like these)
I get not everyone feels this way, but to me, it’s all 5mph over, as we’re in a competitive environment, and trash talk is a part of that. You’re always going to have the people who are able to leave the trash talk on the field, and the people who, for whatever reason, always seem to take it home with them.
Now, if I were a blizzard employee and it was my job to draw the line somewhere, I’d say racial slurs or maybe death threats… but even that has nuance because if my friends and I are joking around with each other, I don’t think there should be restrictions.
Exactly. It just comes down to people not being able to take what they dish out. Think of someone who goes to a comedy show, laughs at every joke for the first half hour and has a great time, but then when a joke that applies to them is told, suddenly “that comedian is bad, someone needs to do something about this”
Sexism, slurs, and other hate speech - unacceptable and should be an insta report and ban. I don’t really need to explain this.
Toxicity towards teammates, namely flaming based on scapegoating - if it happens consistently, they should work their way through punishment tiers. Toxicity towards teammates does nothing but tilt your teammates at best. It’s not only being a jerk and making their day just a little worse, you’re also lowering your team’s chances of winning.
If someone is constantly complaining about their team in VC or chat, absolutely yes. You contribute nothing to the game and are just whining for the sake of it. That’s absolutely toxic.
