PvE skill tree died for Stadium mode?

Stadium is probably the worse mode ever. Now it has a kinda skill tree or more like a MOBA system, but isn’t PvE not a MOBA at all. It’s tries to be so much, yet, it’s nothing.

Seriously, all the resources you put in the game could be used for an actual fun PvE mode with skill system your promised which was actually the reason for Overwatch 2.

I am more and more disappointed in Overwatch. I gave Overwatch another chance, because it finally rewarded somepalyers with lootboxes, which are drastically reduced now. I tried Stadium, maybe could be a good MOBA mode, but it’s freaking boring and unbalanced. Who came up with the ideas like permanent damage buff skills in a PvP game? Who shall a lance that? It’s impossible.

Thank you, but no. I skip this season, maybe next time.

There’s still a chance, at least make a PVE version without the ranking.

They should make a rouge like pve type mode with these hero abilities.

PvE was dead before Stadium was in development. It’s a way to somewhat salvage some of that mess and hopefully gradually build it into something bigger.

Really, good PvE with decent replay value takes far far more than just a talent system and the reality is that they never got even remotely close. Jeff made a terrible mistake and the remaining devs had to pick up the pieces. It is what it is, there’s no magic wand to wave and make PvE happen.

Some people need to really move on and let go of the past, this is from someone who was very excited for PvE back in the day and also very disappointed.

They tried PvE, they know there is demand for it and they did try. It did not work. Recycling resources into PvP is a good enough compromise and if they did do PvE in the future, it should be a completely separate game / spin-off title and not combined with the main game.

I personally think we will get PvE in the far future once they solidify the core of PvP with talents/stadium, but this won’t be for years at the least.

Pve died for money gain sake.

Not for stadium.

They just reused their old idea.

Pve was never a thing anyways.

I wouldn’t call that trying at all. The PvE mission we good are like the PvE missions we got for free in the anniversary events when Overwatch 1 was a thing. They thought, they could make money from it, but they quality was worse.

Now they reused the tree system for the Stadium mode and ti’s horrible

PvE died because the people in suits is not willing to fund and it will take even more years for it to come if they went that route.

A lot of content would have gone to waste and they added those in stadium.

Well, I disagree with your take on stadium because I don’t think we’ve explored everything yet and I still see some ways to counter certain builds. But we’re not sure until a meta starts to set in.

But I also get where your sentiment comes from. Which usually stems from our assumptions and experiences with games like MOBA’s and other PVE/Talent tree game systems. But I think it’s not right to do a comparison expecting a copy of another game since it’s basically just Overwatch with extra steps and that was clear to me since they announced it.

I think stadium was just an extra little feature to kinda add something new to the game; they put a small team to it, maybe utilize some of the left over ideas and assets and perhaps compete with new competitors in the market, but it’s basically just Overwatch. So, I think if you don’t like the core game as it is now, you’re not going to like anything they ever add now or in the future until it’s a wholly originally new game released.

With regards to PVE, I don’t think there is going to be any ever. That project failed because the company didn’t want to and/or couldn’t develop it. Nothing more to it really.

In my view, there was no cohesive long term plan to follow through with the development properly. Overwatch 2’s idea was oversold, overpromised, overhyped; but they couldn’t do it for various internal reasons.

One of the importantly discussed alleged reasons was that the higher ups in management wanted to change the game into an F2P and sell skins like a Fortnite, and that clashed with how they intended to market OW2 PVE (aside all the other company drama). Maybe they were greedy and wrong, or maybe they were right and OW2’s idea of PVE was just unfeasible, who knows.

They gave out a little monetized demo after the cancelation was revealed to see if people were still interested but it was half-baked and no one really bought it, so it was fully scrapped. That was the end of it.

So, this was clearly discussed and canceled after the event and in my view clarified at their last blizzcon. They apologized and said they are going to focus on the core game PVP. Which is what they have been doing since, and basically what OW always has been and continues to be (heroes, maps, cosmetics, rebalance, reworks, mini events).

To be clear, imo, there is never going to be PVE anymore unless by some miracle they announce it again as a new thing. But I believe it isn’t going to be anything that was promised before nor related to it anymore if that were to happen, and just let that expectation die because it’s gone.

PvE and a lot of things around it died a long time ago. Stadium is the result of a lot of code refactoring and cleanup in the engine, a desire to see the work done on talent trees not go to waste, and a need for a new style of gameplay.

PvE died when Julia Humphries left as lead skill-tree designer. She was a fabulous dev who refused to put up with one of the most toxic workplaces in gaming. Her ideas were so good, they got her to teach game development at university. Her first lesson to her students is: never work for Team4, they are full garbage.

When they lost her, they lost any hope for PvE/relevance.

The are just directly using the work that was done for hero missions to create stadium.
They didn’t want all those years of work to go to waste.

They could update the custom games with more tools and add all the null sector assets. I hope they also add all this stadium stuff in there eventually.

At that point the community just makes the pve for them.

It’s less that pve died for Stadium, and more that pve was murdered and this mutant rose from its corpse. How you feel about that mutant is up to you.
