SMS protect is an additional “authenticator” for your account - and in some cases it will require verification without letting you use your real authenticator.
In other words - if you lose access to your phone number, you lose access to your account. You will have to contact customer support and provide your ID to recover it.
I know because it’s happened to me before with one of my accounts I used to use in World of Warcraft way before Overwatch.
Just trying to keep y’all covered.

Can’t we just set up a new temporary phone number, replace our blizz mobile number with that, then use that to get in?
Kind of a runaround, but if it only wants to “verify” you once every couple months or whatever it’s not a big deal.
If you want to change your phone number, you still need to put the code that is sent to the previous number, that is the point of 2FA. Otherwise anyone can change your number.
There’s other options for 2FA. The phone number isn’t really for 2FA anyway, it’s there to limit the number of accounts people have.
SMS protect has been around for more than a decade, it’s not meant for limiting the number of accounts you have, it’s meant for being used in lieu (or sometimes in replacement of) your authenticator.
If you change important information on your account such as your email and have SMS protect enabled, it can only be authorized through SMS protect.
Originally it was, sure, but for OW it’s just there as a cap on your accounts.
I’d have to test that, but I’ve always been able to do whatever I need with just the app-based authenticator.
Edit: I’ve just tested this by trying to remove my mobile number - The app-based authenticator works just fine.
Yeah I actually had to do this a few days ago LOL luckily customer support was very good and fairly quick
Yes but you STILL needs to enter the code that was sent to the previous number if you want to change your number. So your method cannot work.
See my edited post above.
