PSA: AMD Driver Issue

Just a heads up; the most recent AMD driver (Adrenalin 24.4.1) has issues on some configurations, causing driver timeouts and crashing the game.

Fun fact, I had a crash mid game and I didn’t get banned because I had the sense to not just jump into a major game mode right after an issue. I did a Vs AI game (where it crashed again) and decided to double check the release notes as I admittedly only checked the fixes this time.

I could have rolled back the drivers, but I already finished the pass and don’t particularly care about titles…So I started going through my backlog. Currently playing Bayonetta 3. Afterwards it DMC V and then Stellar Blade.

AMD drivers causing crashes is the reason why I swapped to NVIDIA after my RX 5700 XT started to show its age. AMD still is king for price to performance, but they really need to improve driver updates.

Honestly it’s the first time I’ve had an issue like that in years. The only issue I’ve had orecently is high idle power draw…which this driver largely fixes for me.

If anything I’ve had more issues with Nvidia, specifically with VR. I’m using a really old nvidia driver in my vr setup because the newer ones hate my CV1. I havent touched those drivers in 2 or three years XD

The community really needs to learn this lesson.

The frequency of threads made by people who didnt learn that is almost frightening.

Do basic due diligence + be considerate + have a basic understanding of schedules = profit

The amount of mental gymnastics people use is amazing.

I remember one guy complaining that they got a 2-day ban because they kept leaving to get mail…at the same time.

Bad luck exists…

Someone might get a GPU driver crash, ISP does maintenance, Overwatch build might be bugged, phone call next time, emergency, etc. As for your VR troubles, I don’t buy into gimmicks so wouldn’t know. I never had any driver issues on GTX 690, GTX 780 Ti, GTX 1080 Ti, or RTX 4090. Only time I had driver issues were on RX 5700 XT and Radeon VII. Not to say there aren’t any issues with NVIDIA drivers, only ones that affected me were on AMD.

Unfortunate and/or unexpected things do happen, but I believe there are plenty of responsible ways to identify, mitigate, and/or resolve those things in most scenarios. And if an issue is consistently happening, then I’d have difficulty calling that bad luck.

The VR issues were pretty well documented and were often in the nvidia threads.

As far as being a gimmick, it’s all relative. Some people view specific games, specific gaming aspects, or gaming as a whole as gimmicks, but I don’t expect either of us to stop playing games anytime soon.

We do what we like…as long as it’s legal. That’s all there is to it.

Sure; and I’m just sharing my experience on both AMD and NVidia as well.

Impossible to fix bad luck, scientists have better chance of curing cancer. Players should not be punished for problems outside their control.

If it’s happening consistently enough to cause issues, then it’s unlikely to be an issue with “luck”. And, as I mentioned before, there are plenty of things people can do that are within their control to identify, mitigate, and/or resolve those things.

Whether a person acknowledges their options or wants to use those options is another matter.

Yes, like getting banned.

Yes, continuing to play after having an issue or while having a history of consistent issues is a valid option.

I never said a person had to make good decisions or that they would like their decisions or the outcome.

Yeah. They have very bad driver support in general (though rarely anything that affects OW) which is why I don’t even get near AMD products anymore.
They are cutting way too many corners.

I don’t know if corners were cut, but the results were awful this time. Other games and applications started running slow and crashing as well, so I actually had to roll back their drivers for the first time in years.

It was legit disappointing since my high power usage issue was largely resolved .

That’s why the punishment is small the first time.

however

Having unresolved known driver issues that are causing you to crash, and continuing to queue for comp and crashing does not constitute a situation “beyond your control” no matter how you try to spin it. Anyone who chooses to play Comp without being reasonably sure that the crashing issue is fixed should suffer the consequences.

The problem is, as far as the chart showed, it’s per 20 games and no cool down. So you might think it’s fixed only for it to happen again and to add one and make it a very long timeout

Tbh on Windows, both vendors have bad history on drivers quality and releases.

Nvidia are famously for having bad game ready drivers, which is why I often stick with their studio ones. Which most games have more than one game ready driver due the first ones being pretty bad.

As general rule, waiting about 1-2 months do some wonders on both cases, 3 months often is the sweetest spot.

AMD also notoriously have issues on newest drivers too, but not as often due not making their drivers as game ready as nvidia ones. But overall have some incompatibilities with older stuff from Vista/XP era, which annoys a bit. But custom drivers are often great overall.

Which is funny, due on Linux AMD Mesa are amazing and Nvidia proprietary are often bad.

You’re using HYPR-RX? I noticed that some eco profiles and stuff like that often makes some stuff instable. Appears to not be in sync with diverse number of brands of the market

That’s what dry runs are for.
I specifically tested in a mode where I wasn’t affecting a real match. Others can do the same.

Is there a 100% percent possibility that successful dry runs means the issue is fixed?
No, but it certain means much better odds of avoiding issues is very simple form of due diligence.

Nope. I rarely touch my setting beyond fan profiles and, towards a gpus later years, mild overclocks.

I noticed that recently some profiles and settings were turned on as default. I would suggest check it.

I had issues on my gpu when they released Hypr-RX eco specifically. Not when was only Hypr-Rx only, although I often turn it off.

I just noticed that due I often undervolt and change the fan curve from my gpu. Each update my profile goes away and some settings goes “on/enabled”.
