Will we ever see them? It is so easy to do. I come to a conclusion that blizzard is simply against this idea, and I do not really understand why.
What’s private settings?
An option to make workshop settings not visible for anyone beside owner. And therefore, intellectual property not being stolen by random people.
I’m on your side here, but I fear that every workshop mode technically belongs to blizzard.
But thats just my guess, since I have no official source for that.
You are correct. Under the Custom Games Acceptable Use Policy, all custom games are “the sole and exclusive property of Blizzard.”
@Blizzard guys, can you comment anything on this topic, please? We do not discuss legal things or user agreement, it is fine that blizzard owns rights for custom games made in workshop. We just need private settings to protect game modes from unauthorized changes and access.
This would be great, actually a gamemode i’ve worked one has been stolen, someone else added their name in the description and delted mine. And now created a whole discord around the gamemode i made without any actual credit given to me. Since there isn’t actually anything i can do i came to the conclusion i have to (well forced really) to live with this not being able to take any action.
Just as a cheery on top of all this, after insulting the people who stole my gamemode and made it theirs i’ve received a 2 month suspension on my main account. Mahalo blizzard!
Bump.

I’d also appreciate a private script option for one of my game modes.
All my other modes I’d like to keep public, but in that one case I’d use a private option to “protect the integrity of the game mode”

You know that people are also able to save presets if they join your lobby/game? They don’t need to be owner for it either.
That’s even worse than what happened to me .
My story:
So when I was on xbox, I made a floor is lava mode with special new random cool things, and some mean man copyed it and put his name on it (like everywhere).
SO, then I put my name all over the code, put a note in my code that told him to please not copy me, or to give me some credit,
So guess what he does next? He copys my code, puts a message that said I suck that whent off when his game started.
What a mean, rude peron… I hope they got reported off the platform…
Of course anybody who treat workshop seriously knows about this. The idea is that people who dont own the mode will only have access to string of random symbols which now is used as a link to settings in blizzard’s data base, so anybody can still copy it and host a server of any existing mode just like before. But nobody beside owner can open private preset in workshop editor and couldn’t read/edit it.
This very much is an Open Source sort of thing. Private settings would put a halt to this, and for whose gain? Who cares if people “steal” your code? If someone creates something that others enjoy, using your code, what’s the problem?
On another note “It is so easy to do”, I’m not sure what gives you that impression, but I highly doubt there’s any truth to this.
As you can see, I do care, otherwise I would not make 3rd thread asking for same thing.
For general health of community and for a motivation to make something worthy.
Because I have enough brain cells to understand how easy it is to program such basic things.
So I know it has been said before (Don’t remember what thred i read it from) But anyways…
2 ways i use to stop ppl from stealing my code, or at least stop them for being able to enjoy it.
1, add a “game self destruct” rule. Make sure you name the rule something that blends in with all the other rules (And obviously bury it in the middle of all your rules) Make is so that IF the host doesn’t do a specific action, it ruins the game… Maybe ends the match, or sets all players speed supper slow. Or deletes a variable that’s critical to the function of the game, or whatever… And as for an action, Host has to press a specific sequence of buttons at the correct time(s). OR stand in a specific place in the map. or whatever…
While i DO have this implemented in my games i also
2, Change presets after the game launches. So what i do is, launch my preset of whatever custom game i’ve made. Once the map loads, i go to game options, select a different preset (Any of the basic games modes will work.) & this removes all the workshop rules from being copied. Weirdly enough, the game functions no differently. But if someone copies the game, all they copy is the New preset, which in this case, has no workshop elements.
Only draw back to doing this is you lose the workshop inspector function. So if something bugged in your game, you lose the ability to look at the Inspector to see what happened.
Hope this helps…
These things are cool, especially second one, though, It is not what I am looking for. People should still be able to copy the game code and host their own servers, but not have any access to workshop settings in any form or shape, and to non-workshop settings preferably too, because you can still ruin the balance by just changing some basic things that existed before workshop.
Prevent people save your custom game settings specially an mode that you have made and someone copy your script and self call as “owner” of script that YOU created.
They need add some options like:
-
Read only script:
Someone use your script share code, and cannot edit your script (like if you receive moderador of custom game, you cannot edit rule names, commets or custom strings) but in this “Read only script” will prevent everything, cannot add, remove, edit anything (rule, conditions or actions) even also cannot change variables -
Partial readonly script.
Same as “readonly script” (see above), except you can modify only strings/custom strings/variables names (for example, help to translate script for another languages.
