Private profiles should not be able to view public profiles

Just to be clear this was a topic posted on Reddit a couple of hours ago by another user (unsure if giving credit is etiquette or against the rules so I won’t include names atm.

I think I am a fan of this.

If you are going to intentionally keep
Your profile private for fear of other people harassing you; that’s totally fine. However they also should not be able view your profile.

If you prioritise “not receiving toxicity” over keeping your profile information available to make things more transparent for your team ~ for better or worse ~ then you in turn shouldn’t be able to view others public profiles.

I think this is the answer. Everyone still has the right to remain anon should they wish to do so, however much more people will change to “open” status, which makes the overall experience more transparent as a whole.

Now just to be clear, my account when public makes me look like a total no life, sad, one trick mercy main. I still advocate for these changes, because honestly I prioritise competitive success over a non toxic gaming experience.

Don’t agree and would rather stay anon? That’s cool! With this system we equally retain our rights to anon while also providing more transparency for those who want it.

What are your thoughts?

This is why I hide my profile to begin with. The player that criticizes it almost always has their own profile private. Though your idea still does nothing for smurfs.

Don’t care. Haven’t looked at someones profile in game for anything other than clicking “report” in a very very long time. As long as that’s still available, I’m fine.

I think this is a pretty good idea, it’s similar to not being able to see if someone else is online on a messaging app if you have hidden your own status. I’m in favour of it.

I criticise the way things currently work, however I remain completely open.

What my profile tells people is that:

  • I play OW for several hours a day
  • I have a 60% win rate on mercy
  • I am a sad no life

Sure people will criticise me, but they can also see that I’m an absolutel

My profile is public and I do not support this idea. In my experience, most players that have a private profile simply don’t do anything. They do not get toxic, they also do not say anything in match, team, or voice chat.

People have private profiles because they don’t want to be harassed. And I opted to have my profile public for a reason. Why bar someone for viewing it?

If they get toxic, I ignore them. They have a private profile. They’re hiding something for some reason, while I am not. Their comments are water off my back.

It’s not to bar someone from viewing it, but to prevent the toxicity that comes naturally from providing any form of anonymity

So they get to shield themselves from criticism but everyone else can’t mirror that?

You can mirror that. Its called selecting an option known to the masses as… "private profile. "

I personally dont care. Sometimes i have my profile open, sometimes i have it private, just depends on how I feel that day.

The only reason I look at other players profiles is in unranked matches, so I can see if the other team is loaded up with masters level players or not.

Obviously I know that.

I mean the other person can’t mirror that one-sided viewing of profiles.

short answer:
no

Longer answer:
if someone chooses a public profile, they are saying “I am ok with anyone seeing my profile”

Anyone

this includes people with private profiles

How about we have more options to choose from then other then private profile and show everything you ever played going back years?

Like allow some customisation so you can have an open profile for friends/other people with open profiles while everyone else only sees what you played the last season or whatever else you want to show.

Same. That’s all I care about. If I see it. I leave.

I’d love this. I’d enable my rank to be shown at all times. So people can quickly leave QP. If they think its unbalanced.

I don’t really experience toxicity regarding it. It rarely happens, and often by people who also have public profiles.

You can also set your profile to private. The same options are available to you.

i dont leave, but it prepares me for a rough game, ill know what’s coming. Kinda like the inevitable fate of growing old. You know there’s nothing you can do to stop it, you just have to prepare best you can for the bumpy times

This again. I’m pretty sure profiles are set to private to default, so you have to make a conscious decision to set it to public. That’s what it means, public. It’s like saying only other actors or politicians should know each other’s names.
In other words, you want to show your profile, but only to “the right people”.

I agree I may be a boomer but in my day we had a rule “if you show me yours I’ll show you mine”

I think Bozobrain unwittingly started a movement

There was also another idea in that same thread which I’d be okay with, too. I don’t know if I prefer one over the other, both sound good and would fix my issues with private profiles:

Private profiles should never been the default.
