EDIT: OH WOW Y’ALL REALLY CANNOT READ PAST THE TITLE. ONLY VOTE PROTECTION FROM TEAMMATES, NOT THE ENEMY TEAM.
It honestly never fails to surprise me how tone-deaf these devs can get. If people on your team see your “preferred hero” is any of the unpopular kids (Widow, Ball, Doom, Moira, Zen, Mercy, etc etc), they WILL get voted more. Either protect these preferred heroes from being voted by teammates, or scrap this feature entirely. No doubt we’re going to see a lot of false “preferred heroes” for this very reason.
You can just choose a preferred hero that isn’t your main. You can lie to your teamand hopefully they won’t ban your hero since they don’t think anyone will be playing them.
Okay then it’s just a pointless addition.
I’ve only once seen a team go out of their way to ban a character because they saw their teammate pick it in MR.
Only if the character in question sucks to play with. Take Widow, for example. I’ll be sticking her at the top of my ban list on certain maps. But do I dislike having a Widow on my own team? Nah. I wouldn’t vote to ban her only to spite a teammate that wants to play as her.
Same goes for all the characters you listed, really. I think the only characters I strongly dislike playing alongside right now are Hog and LW. Even Sombra’s no longer so bad, imo, since she got perma-invis removed.
I get your worries but I’m more concerned about tank and support role regarding hero bans than DPS tbh. DPS roster is big enough already, losing 2 max isn’t the end of the world. If S76 and Cassidy gets banned, you could still go Ashe or Bastion against fliers for example.
But support? What other impactful heroes are there if ana and kiri gets banned and my co-support insta-locks Juno? There’s only bap or zen but both heroes have become much weaker in 5v5 environment, not to mention even less synergistic with the team.
Illari is too weak, mercy is too team-reliant, moira is not that good above gold, brig is map dependent, Life weaver is a troll pick, and lucio is map/team-composition dependent, not to mention his healing output being low.
That’s what I’m worried about the most, losing too many strong heroes in my role. Which I foresee being a primarily issue in the tank and support roster due to their limited hero pool.
Abuse that fact. Adopt the LePomelo method. Instock Ball and ask politely for Sombra bans. The team players will satisfy the hit and the bad actors will waste their votes on Ball to make a Sombra ban even more likely.
There are a lot of them about, but generally speaking it averages out at one unpleasant weirdo per team, imo. So I reckon spite-bans won’t be too widespread since a weirdo, maybe two, won’t have enough voting power to do something dumb.
…Although having said that, I can’t even remember what the rules for grouping currently are in Comp. I can imagine (say) a three-stack of jerks being annoying when it comes to bans. Hm.
Also, I’ll be playing Max 2 Tanks. A preferred character function will be kinda nice to show that I’d like to play a tank/DPS/support without the awkward composition management between players as we work out just who is going to be playing which role.
This is what doom one tricks should probably do. Select ball as your “preferred hero” and request for sombra ban. The worst that can happen is your team tilt-banning ball instead, but you still get to keep your doomfist
Precisely. I was worried about Doomfist getting banned, but with this strategy, I have no fear whatsoever. They will either help me or bow down, but they will never stand in my way!
This feature is to filter unfun heroes to play against/with. Protecting the most unfun heroes from ban is meaningless imo.
I think this should be in QP as well, because filtering unfun heroes is more about fun and less frustration than competitiveness.
Ban data in mid tiers and QP where people play for fun will be much more valuable info than pickrate/winrate in high tiers.
The devs should understand better with the data what’s a good(fun) character design in PvP and what not. Also, it’ll give an indication which character requires a rework.
Except unlike Marvel Rivals which is 6v6 Open Queue, Overwatch is 5v5 Role Queue. Which means tank and support players will have quite a limited hero pool if 2 of them gets banned in their role.
At least in Rivals, if you feel like too many strong hero has gotten banned in the role you’re playing and you feel like you can’t carry the game anymore, you could swap roles with another player who are less skilled than you.
There’s also no role limit either in Rivals, which makes playing individually weaker heroes less of a throw pick due to stronger synergy (e.g. triple support comps).
