It really pains me to say this. I had a lot of memories and hours on Overwatch 1 and 2, spent hundreds of $$$ on skins and content. as much as I don’t want this to happen, and as much of a speckle of hope I have for Overwatch as an IP and team 4, I have a grave prediction:
This year at Blizzcon, Overwatch 2’s turn will imbue hope in the crowd. they will promise lots of PvE content, a roadmap, probably an animated series of sorts (verrrry unlikely lol). we will all be excited once again in this vicious cycle. come the new year, all hope will be lost.
Season 9/10’s pve will be extremely mediocre (and predictably so would Invasion), people will end up losing all the hope they had in Overwatch. this will lead to cancellation of the promised animated series and most content people will look forward to causing even more rage and disappointment. afterwards…
a letter will be brought to public announcing the sunsetting of OW2 servers in first quarter of 2025, thanking the players for the “journey”.
I honestly believe if/when this happens, Overwatch as an IP will be the biggest disaster and lesson learnt of all gaming since the 1983 crash. Tbf, we are already at disaster point.
Even with all of the poor tactics by Blizz, it is hard to imagine them shutting down servers by late 2024. It will always be more popular than a game like Paladins, but tbh OW2 by your date will be closer to Paladins in population than OW1’s population
You’re crazy if you think they’ll shut down the servers in 2024… What will most likely happen is they’ll do long 6 month seasons like in Infinite to still profit off the store. Eventually, after the playerbase dwindles to large extent it’ll see maintenance mode. The real question is if we will ever see enough PVE missions before the great sleep.
The servers will never shut down. Even if they stop making new content they’ll leave it up like HotS.
But I don’t think they will ever stop making new content either. You guys are severely underestimating how popular this game still is. It’s the most popular FPS out aside from the BR games and CSGO/Val.
Dumb and delusional if you truly believe that Overwatch will shut down when there are games far older and less successful with less than 50 logins a day still up and running.
Season 9 seems to be like itll make or break alot of people. Frankly I can’t believe it’s taken them this long to fix comp. If their balance still sucks after that. I can see things going south quickly.
