With the release of OW2, OW1 won’t exist anymore. It’ll be impossible to play 6v6, except for maybe some obscure arcade mode. Overall, the game will change drastically, in ways not everyone is happy with. This has happened to other Blizzard games before, and they often published a “Classic”, an old version maybe slightly improved, as a seperate game.
My theory is that the same will happen with OW. Unless the release is an overhelming success, which maybe can still happen, a significant portion of players will be nostaligic of the OG OW. Some people already are, and despise most if not all new heroes (doom, ball, sombra, even ana or echo …). Some miss OQ as main mode, or the slower-pace game we had before.
The way Blizzard can keep these players, and even sell a new product, is to release classic OW in a few years. They’ve done it in the past, why not again ?
They won’t do this, because they won’t risk splitting the playerbase because of queue times. It also would in theory lessen interest in OWL, and that is a big no-no for them.
Regardless of where you stand, Overwatch 2 is going to be radically different from the game that we paid for. It sucks that we won’t be able to play that anymore.
They did it with WoW, I don’t see why they wouldn’t do it with OW if OW2 started to have a dwindling playerbase
That’s my biggest irk with OW2 is that there won’t be no OW1 anymore, I’m not a fan of the Sombra rework so my own fear-of-change is kicking in but I will try OW2 out regardless
No Limits is still my favorite mode, by far. Personally, I don’t think they will ever do anything to accommodate that crowd.
You give the devs way too much credit. The game will be played how the community decides to play it. I believe most things will be largely the same. Look at role-queue (or even hero limits); It didn’t magically fix (or change) anything, we just have DPS players playing the more flashy tanks/supports like they are DPS heroes.
