There seems to be a lot of players who think mauga is op like mad.

maybe if people would post maugas counters, and how and why they counter him, it will help put to rest some of the outrage people have when they go against him.

Hot take: Mauga isnā€™t broken, itā€™s very much possible to play around him with non-Mauga picks if you know what youā€™re doing. But Mauga gets way more value of out significantly less effort than the opposing tank not playing Mauga, and that is why Mauga feels so bad.

Maugaā€™s kit basically centers around durability and a very high DoT-esque rapid fire. Generally speaking, the only real counter to that is huge burst damage. I mean huge. Like, one-shot the guy huge. Otherwise, in principle, his low mobility while firing should be a weakness.

Once the numbers in his kit are nerfed semi-properly, we can start talking mechanisms, but heā€™s not really gonna be in the counterplay rotation either way unless Sombra starts getting backstabs like the spy in TF2 or if Mauga just gets a straight up rework.

I like to play Lucio and always do well vs Mauga

If Iā€™m playing tank? Winston or Junker Queen. Dive/Rush his backline and play around with him. Whenever he runs, you leap behind new cover. Do not give him the satisfaction of using his passive or sustain ability on a big target, make him work for it.

If Iā€™m playing DPS? Iā€™ll use Cassidy. Hell, any hero with high burst damage can beat him, but it requires taking down his pocket healer(s) first otherwise heā€™ll just eat through the damage.

If Iā€™m playing support? Zen. Ana and Zen bully every tank.

I seriously feel Zen is underrated and underrepresented in the Mauga discussions.

Seconded, but for every discussion. While you definitely canā€™t make him work as well in every scenario as before, heā€™s definitely more map/comp dependent now, heā€™s still very strong.

Zen always feel problematic, tanks always seem to complain about ā€˜low healingā€™ because of him, should I report them?

I play his biggest counter.

I still think he needs to be toned down.

But I have seen the following heroes do pretty good against him (i.e., theyā€™re not shredded by him, can pressure him, etc.) and excluding Ana because thatā€™s pretty obvious IMO:

  • Ramattra
  • Sigma
  • Hanzo
  • Sojourn
  • Bastion (taking out his ult especially)
  • Baptiste
  • Kiriko (although she also enables him)
  • Zenyatta (unless they have flankers, then RIP Zenyatta)

100% not winston. If the Enemy Maug isnā€™t trash you will get shredded insanely fast

Sig and Deva play very well aginst Maug and Zhar can be somewhat decent

For situations like these and others like them, I reccomend against participating in lobby and team chat, and team voice.

In my experience, itā€™s the people complaining about others who tend to pull less than their weight. I advise you to ignore them, intentionally fail to heal them, win the game anyway and also get PotG on Zen just as the final nail in the coffin of their self-image (50 seconds in).

While zen is good vs mauga, I feel like if itā€™s a mauga v mauga, having the Ana or kiri instead of zen is the better choice.

To tackle him head on? Antinade + Bastion if he overcommits. But the best option is to snipe the supports. The problem is that he isnā€™t a tank in any capacity. He is a DPS character on steroids filling the tank slot. At least Hog can pretend heā€™s bringing something other than damage to the team with hooks and slow traps, but Mauga has nothing other than DPS. He feels OP because the tank role is trash right now and he avoids that by being a hitscan DPS with self sustain instead.

Zenā€™s very difficult to play well after the nerf and Mauga CAN roll him if Mauga is smart. If Mauga just tries to randomly ult Zen without baiting discord though, and Zen has transcā€¦ Mauga ded.

just wait until they commit to use discord. thats it. nerf countered.

Zen completely melts the guy. But, thanks to all the pitch-fork mongering a few months ago he is significantly less useful against him than he would be thanks to those nerfs

but ya know in t500 haha lolā€¦ like that has anything to do with just being smarter to counter the nerf.
