Poke holes in my "Counterwatch"/matchmaker Idea

Just thought of this today from someone elses point made about the matchmaking. Thought it is worth a discussion of it’s own, might delete later.

Overall rank doesn’t mean you’re good with all characters. This could create the case for character based rankings over role ranking.

In order to incorporate a more accurate placement the MM would need to know which character you’re picking in a role before the game starts.

Obviously people swap in-game. So maybe you pick a pool of 3 characters in a role you are going to play for that game. It would take your average SR/MMR with those specific characters. You could ONLY play those 3 characters throughout the game.

Your 3 picks could really screw over your team and leave you unable to counter an enemy unfortunately, but that could be a neat (or awful) change to the game.

This could limit the “counterwatch” argument the I’ve seen throughout the forums lately too.

And you could work around it this system by picking 2 characters you’re plat with and 1 you’re bronze with - lowering your average. Which then you’d be smurfing with your plat…

So this isn’t a perfect system either, or fully thought out, please poke holes in this for discussions sake

I’d be interested in trying out a limited time mode of it.

Each player picks 3 hero’s they can swap between- seems fine to me. Would limit the AMOUNT of counterpucking maybe out of toxic levels but still allow players to try and have “sets” of hero’s they master that round each other out well.

I’ll pick one decent hole in it though- this would create a new meta of “hero sets” that I guarantee would become stale very fast and would bottleneck hero choices.

Example- in masters (or even diamond) and above, dps WILL be

Tracer/sojourn/ranged hitscan 90% if the time

And I am even willing to be it would go

Tracer/Cassidy (to counter guarantee tracers)/widow (because widow forms a triangle in this meta where she destroys Cassidy but he will be picked sometimes anyway to handle tracer)

Similar thing in support role…

Ana/kiriko/lucio

Moira and lucio are risky against anti and suzu is the answer, but lucio is so strong he will contend for a pick anyway. Picking outside this 3 set is super risky because you risk no longer having an answer for meta tactics.

Long story short- off meta or niche picks will become incredibly risky in the event heavy generalists hero’s strategies can’t be countered by them.

If I were to include mei or sym in me hero set of 3, I still need tracer or I’m quite literally soft throwing these days, snd I better be good enough with her to deal with widow or Ashe and the line or else my 3rd option is now locked to them as well.

Not to mention “hitscan” will eternally be mandatory as long as pharah and to a lesser extent echo exist.

Tank will be “barrier tank, dive tank, brawl tank” and it will likely be the generalist if each of those, though I see it not being as bad for tanks, however I do see the same old paper rock scissors being an issue.

A key benefit from all this however would be the dps role would be HARD PRESSED to afford intentionally bringing along a tank buster due to the set limitations, which may take a load of stress off of tanks.

They have bastion tracer Ashe? Ok then I can count on not dealing with reaper, so I feel comfortable playing xyz.
