Having tried a matchmaking system that does not use an algorithm to determine a person’s skill level in order to match them against other players, I have found it so refreshing, not because I am winning with crazy winning streaks or losing with crazy losing streaks, but that I know that I am being matched up against random people, not people the computer has chosen in order to make that match “interesting”. I honestly can’t see how overwatch competitive will be able to survive unless they make changes to their own system. Period.
It has survived this long…
People are addicted. Play it for what thr game is, not what it could be.
There will alqays be imbalance and cheap heroes in OW. Skill will always be counter-able with cheese low-effort. That’s this team’s mantra
All games will use an algorithm to do that. OW’s is just simply based on wins and losses.
But, as should always be the case, if this other game is so much better in your opinion. Play it, don’t waste your time thinking about games you deem inferior. Go have fun.
It is pretty impossible to avoid that tbf. Even MR will have it, if it doesn’t already. When you introduce that many heroes with that variety in abilities. There will always be “issues”.
As I always have said. Balance is a myth. They shouldn’t be searching for it. They should just try to mix things up each season, then nerf whats a little too much and buff whats struggling.
I dunno what game you are talking about. But MR had a matchmaker in beta.
It’s just plain chaos now because it is release and there is no data on anyone.
Set amount of points per win. Everyone starts at lowest rank and goes up from there. Matchmaker matches within those ranks. Skill is naturally sorted by performance and wins and losses and not collected data based on arbitrary stats rather than wins and losses. That’s a fair system. LOL out all the MMR detractors have probably left so no one coming to defend changing the MMR in OW2. Guess loss of revenue will have to win the argument,
to be fair, until people have settled into the ranks they ‘deserve’, you really cannot judge the system.
I can tell you for a fact right now that I am not a bronze 3 player but that’s the rank I am at. why? because I, and most other people, have not put enough time in to get a rank that is even remotely related to their skill.
on the other hand, someone could just put hours in and get lucky with the people they get placed with. it will take a while before the ladder is in any position to pass judgement on.
Took a handful of matches to hit Bronze 2, with a notice that I’m ranked higher than 58% of the server. Refreshing.
Overtime counter doesn’t reset, just pauses on it’s way down keeping it predictable and easy to understand? Also refreshing.
There’s more that I’m enjoying that is clearly thought through to improve on the hero shooter design. But I’ll be testing the matchmaker over the coming months. Feels straighforward climb and descent though, as a competitive system should be. Doesn’t feel like hidden mmr, looks like score is your rating and they’re matching within a rank of it. No one is an outlier though, so will take a few months.
Also should mention rank is marked per person at start of match. Refreshing? Feels refreshing. But something I’ve seen before but can’t put my finger quite where I saw it…
The menus and “R” screen interfering with character select and scroeboard is probably the only thing grating with me.
they might still have to use algs to basic sort the mm. recall even 1++ is trivial degen alg.
but the algs should be ‘data free and stateless’ aside from the posted label.
just like elo. wysiwyg with no fakeness or rigging for slows against fasts.
full code posted every1 can audit 2 prove 0 fakeness.
if they cant do that they cant do gaming
is that what it is? overtime has felt weird the entire time I’ve been playing.
I absolutely hate the hero select screen. it is an awful example of ui design.
ui in general is a bit mid but that’s the only thing that really annoys me.
edit: in fact no, the fact that there is no dead zone in the communication wheel is a joke. it makes pinging significantly more annoying that it should be. it was designed for a controller and they paid no attention to how it would function with a keyboard and mouse which, I would be willing to put money on, is the primary audience for the game.
also, I think role queue is going to be inevitable once people start realising how easily driveable the supports are and everyone just stops having fun playing them
Skill based match making? nahh could never work.
already been done for the cod crowd and they hated it. said they didnt enjoy sweating to win every match.
Well I don’t have to wait 5+ minutes to get into a match. Millions of players are saying performance based match making works. The game seems to be working since every Overwatch streamer is now a streamer for Rivals. I still would like to come back to OW, but why would I if it takes less time to queue and the matchmaking actually seems fair?
the cod crowd gets the wombo combo of SBMM, MMR, DDA elements. Just like OW since the patents are from the same publisher, are in tier1 active use, and explicitly mention Overwatch.
it’s terrible out there, but with marvel rivals already making AK job irrelevant, they may as well publish their “fairplay” code/algs since there is nothing to rip-off in a fairplay system.
Neither of these are true.
Played some more today, reached Silver 3. Now ranked higher than 77% of the player base. Game gave me a pat on the back and told me I’m a competitive top player and should join a faction and play in the league. At silver 3.
Interestingly there haven’t been any streaks yet. Also either SBmmr is in effect or they are boosting people in general, as I’m losing 20 on a loss and gaining 40 on a win.
Which game was this, exactly and when?
A week later, some more games played. Gold 3 (apparently now above 86% of playerbase). No streaks still. The no streaks thing is incredibly interesting. I’ve had heavy games, and games where I’ve been carried, but no streaks.
Even at that “rank” I’m seeing people unaware of basic game mechanics. I also feel like I’ve only just started opening the doors to the techs this game has in each kit. Counters are there, but fuzzy and have less impact overall.
just an update to this, I’m currently silver 1, I gain 40ish per win and lose 19. there is 100% mmr.
nice more evidence it’s not 1:1 as they claimed.
I don’t think gaining or losing something is evidence that MMR is not 1:1 mapped to your rank.
1:1 means sr:mmr means may as well delete 1 of.
requires 2 conditions:
- if ur hidden mmr goes up faster than stated sr i.e. label mismatch between gui and hidden, then it’s not 1:1.
- smurfs dont exist.
false.
