"Please report our leaver"

I hear this surprisingly often from both my team and the other team that they and everyone else should “report the leaver.” Which several people in the match did. I argued that it was abuse of the report system (since leavers are already punished automatically). Does it count as report system misuse, and can they be reported for false reporting?

we all know reporting doesn’t do anything so why are you worried?

People report leavers because they dont realize they are already heavily punished. Not everyone reads the forums and are aware of leaving penalties.

Its not technically abuse of the report system but its also pointless to report someone who will get arbitrary increasingly harsh punishment.

Technically, you can report them for inactivity.

Report players for inactivity if they are deliberately stalling/AFK in the match but finding ways to stay connected.

It is technically false reporting to report anyone who leaves a match. Remember players who leave and fail to quickly return are AUTOMATICALLY PENALIZED according to Competitive Play Rules and automatically receive Competitive Play Suspensions. Serial leavers will escalate in penalties up to a season ban. Three season bans and a player is banned permanently.

Hi spin,

I sometimes do this, but under spesific circumstances:

When we just got wiped/lost point A/ leaver just got killed and THEN you see “xxx has left” then I ask. Some people are just ragequitters.

When a player disconnects, their hero is still in play for several seconds before the game server times them out, making that hero a sitting duck and a free kill. If you have to report a leaver make sure it is for a reason aside from leaving, such as a player being abusive in chat or showing signs of rage.

Being moral under the current reporting system doesn’t get anything accomplished. Blizzard doesn’t look at these reports for anyone other than high profile or serially abused streamers and you know it.

If you want to get technical about it then leaving a competitive match would be considered poor teamwork as you’re forcing a loss onto your team and inactivity because you are no longer helping them in any capacity. Just because the description of those two report options do not specifically state that is an appropriate way of using it it doesn’t clearly state that it isn’t, either. Support has, however, clearly stated that if you think it should be reported then use the reporting feature to do so.

Because someone is AUTOMATICALLY PUNISHED for leaving a match does not absolve them of the fact they ruined a game. So as players the only power or recourse we have is with the reporting system.

And Blizzard doesn’t care, no matter how much you fight against me on this I will not change my stance; only Blizzard can change my stance with their actions.

Sorry, you feel that way, but I have seen testimony from players get account actioned for false reporting. So I am going to continue to encourage this community to do the right course of action when handling the different problems of our community in Overwatch. Whether you choose to do so or not is at your own risk of course.

My own risk? Adorable.

Did you have proof he left? I would not. Most the time it’s a Disconnect. He’s already punished.

OW’s twitter account says:

No need to report leavers. We automatically punish them already.

And you are correct- I have reported people for false reporting and get the pop up prompt when they have action against them.

the Overwatch twitter also says:

"Playing a certain hero is not against the rules. You have nothing to worry about."

do you see the hypocrisy yet?

No, you’ve not reported anyone specifically for “false reporting” as that’s not an option to report from.

This thread is about reporting leavers. Please stay on topic.

E:

Josh said false reporting is considered griefing, so it can go there.

I’ve always reported leavers. Had one guy leave, reported him (only thing I reported that week), got a message saying, “Thank you for using our report system. We have taken action…”

Reporting for leaving is not false reporting. Reporting someone for picking your character is false reporting.

You brought up a point. I provided a counterpoint to that argument.

Which is support doesn’t know or care what you actually report for as the system is handled on an automatic basis and the only time they get involved (which is to tell you they can’t do anything, mind you.) is after the fact. Because it’s after the fact and the time it takes for support to respond to tickets the suspension is already over or they tell you that they are unable to help due to there not being a case of “you got hacked”.

It takes a literal outcry, media coverage, and a developer admitting the system has failed for ANYTHING to get done.

Finally, I am on topic you just don’t like that I rebutted your argument.

The thread is about appropriateness of reporting leavers, not problems with the report system.

It is a form of griefing. False reporting will be reported if witnessed. If I see it, I am reporting.

If it is a genuine report then that is great. Not all leavers are on purpose but there are many who are and you can usually tell.

Example- some left a team yesterday when their team started to win because they did not want increased SR.

You somehow know when a person physically clicks the report player button? You’re some sort of wizard as saying something doesn’t always equate to an action. In which case you’d be the one making the “false griefing report”.

I’m finished discussing this as I’ve made my stance clear, on both blizzard’s support structure and about leaving a game in general, so we’re just going in circles now.
