SUPPORT
I no longer enjoy support. Most of my gameplay is now healing through the DPS passive and higher health pools. It’s also changed breakpoints, so now my damage on support feels like it has little impact. I think the issue with S8 and beforehand with support is healing numbers were a little too high, which could make DPS frustrating.
DPS
This problem also bleeds into DPS. Sustaining damage characters like Soldier have been left behind in favor of burst damage and one-shot heroes like Widowmaker. Due to the snowball nature of 5v5, if one character on your team dies, the fight is basically over. This further exacerbates player frustration where they feel a good Widowmaker can hold the lobby hostage. It’s not that we need to remove burst/one-shots, but having lower HP makes sustained damage from characters like Soldier and Sym more viable. The higher health pools and armor changes mean tanks feels fundamentally nonpunishable. Several teammates can shoot them and I don’t feel the impact.
TANK
After playing Classic, I came to realize that if we’re going to continue with 5v5, instead of buffing tank health or nerfing headshot damage taken, we should instead be buffing their mitigation abilities across the board. Right now, I’m enjoying all three roles less than I did in early OW2. Adding health to tanks doesn’t make tanking more fun because shooting the enemy tank feels inconsequential.
Overwatch needs to feel lethal. Your skill should be rewarded. The way forward for 5v5 tanking is better mitigation abilities to soak damage for your team. This shifts tanking into a more careful game of cooldown management while keeping the frontline exchange lethal.
CONCLUSION
The combination of headshot reduction, armor changes, DPS passive, and higher HP has all contributed to my personal enjoyment of the game diminishing over the last few seasons, and I hope we can get back on the right track.
It’s not that I expect perfect balance, but I’d like to see a reduction in the number of frustrating gameplay moments.
