The 2-max limitation on tanks appears to be in response to the tank stacking that is often dominant/meta in OQ
This however means that open queue loses some interesting multiple tank composition possibilities
Indeed a large part of the appeal of open queue is the freedom to play any particular composition
Players who desire to play with such limitations always have RQ available
No role limits is largely what differentiates open queue from RQ
A middle ground alternative solution would be to have a random number generator at the start of each match generate a number between one and four that will limit the number of possible tanks
This means that sometimes multiple tank compositions would still occur
Another alternative - if the developers truly intend to proceed with hero bans - is to simply allow all four of the bans to be for any one role such as Tank or Support
This way players themselves can force more variety/shift the meta if desired
It seems unnecessary to have both hero bans and tank role limits simultaneously
One or the other would be preferable to both to preserve open queue freedoms
Absolutely agree, open queue comp was fun because of it being all tanks, 4 tanks and 1 support is so much more fun than only having two tanks. I have really been enjoying grinding open queue comp this season because of it, at least until now, now it sucks.
The last time I queued up for placements in OQ Comp, each game was tri-tank or worse. I donāt even mind playing tank, but it got very boring, very quickly. Ultimately, I didnāt even finish the placements.
So far, this Not Exactly OQ mode has been far more fun for me. Iām hoping that this mode does well enough to replace the stale regular OQ modes next season.
Iām sympathetic but at the same time, I kinda like being able to run two strong-healing supports and then basically substitute a DPS with Zen or Lucio. Maybe Iāll change my mind if I run into some tri-support comp thatās particularly horrible to face.
If that was the price to pay for getting this mode in the game proper, though, Iād definitely pay it.
Iām a casual QP/Arcade only player, so I havenāt tried the 2 tank limit mode in comp. My aversion to playing competitive is stronger than my curiosity to see how it actually feels to play. That said, just the idea of having role limits in OQ is off putting to me. The reason I like OQ is precisely because you have the freedom to play things like 4 tanks 1 support, 3 dps 1 support 1 tank, or even all 5 teammates playing the same role.
I am a little worried that the current OQ format that I prefer is gonna be replaced with this 2 tank limit format, but I donāt think itād totally ruin the game for me, it would just be a pretty big bummer imo.
Kind of off-topic, but I would absolutely love to play no limits as my main mode, but the queue times for it are so dreadfully long that itās just not worth it. Last weekend when I tried queueing for it I tabbed out of the game and the queue ended up being so long that I had even forgotten that I had Overwatch open until I heard the queue pop sound (mustāve been like at least 30-40 minutes), and afterwards when I queued for a second match the queue ended up being 20 minutes long. No limits is my favorite way to play Overwatch, but itās just not worth waiting that long to get to play it.
I actually feel the opposite. With 3 tanks that have about 200 hp less each and only 2 supports, it felt a lot less oppressive to me than the 2 super tanks we have in the current iteration, with 3-4 supps perma keeping them up.
Though there are a few triple tank combos that are just utterly oppressive, that is true. Rein + Zar + DVa and Winston + DVa + Ball typically synergize WAY too well.
This wonāt solve the issue.
Banning 4 tanks wonāt stop 4-0-2/3-0-3 or 4-0-1/3-0-2, theyāll just pick other tanks.
2 tanks max is necessary.
With Queen and Mauga being in the game, they can add onto the group sustain that GOATS was based around. Brig, Mauga, Lucio and Queen would all be healing each other and providing overhealth for each other.
Allowing GOATs to form again will lead to a stronger version of GOATs.
In principle, I agree, but on one hand, as a former OQ player who mostly avoided it in OW2, I welcome the current compromise after years of torture in RQ, and on the other hand, Iāve seen more diversity in team compositions in a single session of āHybridā yesterday than during many months of OQ
