Are you using a hotspot or home internet?

currently at a hotel and im living here for 2 more months

Lots of carrier hotspots have gaming traffic deprioritized to prevent it from hogging the network from regular customers.

What?

That is possibly the dumbest practice I’ve heard of. Gaming requires very little bandwidth at all. They could have 20 people playing overwatch and it would have far less of an impact than one person watching netflix.

Sounds like you are going to have to use a mobile hotspot/tethering if Nicole is correct.

Mobile tethering/hotspot is the issue we’re discussing. Most wireless providers throttle gaming connections. You’ve giving advice to use the thing causing the problem, unless it’s a typo.

Interesting.

I’ve used mobile tethering many times for Overwatch and for 6 months or so it was my only connection to the internet. It was by far the best connection I used albeit expensive before I got fibre.

I thought you were referring to the Hotel Wifi ISP that was prioritizing certain traffic.

In terms of Cellular SP’s none of the ones where I live throttle your bandwidth depending on the application unless you are paying for a cheap cellular package then you get throttled accross the board regardless of what you are doing.

Every other game works fine except overwatch even on the battle.net client like vanguard works without a problem also Im hooked up through LAN not on their wifi

They may not have the ports for Overwatch open, I believe it’s different from some of the other titles. For instance, when school was in-person, many university students would post similar complaints and had to speak to their network admins.

I was actually able to get on today by closing something in my task manager I just dont know what

For future reference close one process in the task manager at a time and test it. That way you know what the cause was for next time.

Well done figuring it out though.

Hey there,

I noticed you mentioned using a LAN connection at a Hotel. The network is likely deprioritizing Overwatch as Nicole mentioned. This can happen on a per-connection basis which means some games may be impacted while others or not. The Hotel IT department is likely unaware of the issue. Most don’t specifically target games but instead have advanced systems that may hit them automatically depending on a large number of variables.

My advice would be to raise the issue to Hotel staff and let them know of it. You may also be able to bypass the issue using a VPN since that would hide what you’re connecting to from the Hotel’s network security. All they would see is the VPN service. Though that’s more of a way around the issue not a true fix. The only true fix would have to be from the Hotel’s IT staff.

I wish we had a more direct solution here but I hope the info helps. Cheers!
