There seems to be some idea going on that Bastion is the June 2016 Bastion, which was super OP (not really even, just no one knew what to do), so 9/10 DPS will swap to Bastion when they’re falling behind and think Bastion will provide big numbers. Even in OW1 tanks could easily shut Bastion down and he needed a half the team pick around him, but now he’s not even that. Yes, Bastion’ll still make a Rein switch, but that’s about it.
His whole gameplan was “be a turret” and no gets 4 seconds (I dunno how long) of it per cooldown. Got some grenade now that can move him up, well, guess what, Junkrat has that too, twice. He’s just a worsr Junkrat now. Less burst, weaker mobility and ult that’s even easier to move out of. And yet, people keep picking him because “damage printer go BRRRR”, I guess.
When someone swaps into Bastion on my team, it’s far more likely gonna end up a detriment to the team, as they’ll just end up countered without dealing any damage.

Bastion isn’t in the running for top tier or anything at the moment but I can’t say I particularly mind having one on my team. Turret is a great barrier buster against not just Rein but Winston, too. And tanks like Zarya are forced to respect turret form or get popped like a zit. The downsides are that Bastion’s a resource sink and that he’s a tempo character. I feel that he could do with a bit of a buff to his default mode’s gun. Possibly the fire rate, since I remember Bastions not being thrilled with the slower rate of fire coming into OW2.
I’d probably prefer a Bastion to the common or garden Junkrat, personally.
bursting things down is fun, esp the new giga tanks that think they are immortal(tho with lamp/suzu/grip) in the game they mite as well be. gotta shred them fast before their braindead babysitters can bail them out. even better witha bastion+mercy pocket.

Bastion was used in OWC where Bastion made the rank 1 Winston swap off Winston.
That is when he was picked up more on the ladder after that game.

I see the swap usually as a last-ditch effort. The enemy is getting stomped for the first two points - we’re right about to make our last push - then BAM - Bastion.
He’s an eyeroll pick when he’s on my team too. I usually have to baby them
Bastion and Orisa are the 2 “oh no I’m losing” switch to heroes
His picked plat down as the break glass in case of emergency pick.
He can destroy tanks and even if you can only pull it off every other fight and die your team can mop up or push.
In the lower ranks the game is basically kill the tank win the game.
I’m p1/d5 and that’s literally almost exclusively all I do at this point.
Correction, not so long ago, Bastion was considered a right pick and this has been causing severe damage for extended time that bastion is in fact, not doing so well in this meta.
I doubt the people you are talking about played Bastion in 2016.

The biggest pain point is as other dps you have to fight a lone battle while the robot hides for few secs every few secs.
We may see a comeback in niche maps. ‘‘Maybe’’.
Sombra can easily target him. Also in high level mmr, bastion is on the front. not back line. He will be the tank shredder. Soon.
often i see people lose and they swap to heroes like bastion. They keep losing but for strange reasons, they stick with bastion. No idea why maybe looks good on the score board if you just dump dmg on the tank?
Welp… SOMEONE has to take care of your beloved Phamercy when your other DPS is prolly a Genji or a Junkrat ya know.
Also those staying way behind their tanks need someone to stop them from operating so I am gonna continue using him in low ELO until ppl figures how to totally shut him down.
