I heard about using this controller as an alternative to WASD keyboard on PC, sounds like a great ergonomic alternative that gives you even more movement control. Is anybody here doing this? If so, do you like it and how are you currently getting it to work? I’ve head about using FireShock, SCPtoolkit and XPadder. I’m thinking of picking one up tomorrow for my Windows 10 gaming laptop.
Any takers? I heard Circci (former Xbox player) just got to #1 in NA using a PS Nav controller so I’m interested in testing out how well it works, especially since it gives full 360 degree movement motion compared to the 8 directions on WASD keyboard (should expand Tracer’s blink destination control significantly).
Practically all Gamestops have this controller used for $3 a pop, so it’s a no brainer to give it a try. Just don’t know how to make it work once I get it hooked up to my laptop.
I didn’t even know this Sony nunchuck existed until this thread made me google it. I’m sure it’s great ergonomically but I’m not so sure how it would effect accuracy, etc.
The idea isn’t to use it for aiming, you’d still use mouse for aiming in your right hand. The idea is to use this nunchuk for movement in your left hand to replace using WASD on keyboard. With WASD you can only move in 8 directions, but with this nunchuk’s analog stick you get full intuitive 360 degree movement (which can be really useful for Tracer’s blinks). It also frees up your fingers, since to move around continuously with WASD requires three dedicated fingers tapping on the keyboard like they’re playing Dance Dance Revolution.
It seems like you would need more buttons for your left hand than that thing has… I have shift and punch bound to my mouse, but I still need W, A, S, D, ctrl, Q, E, and F to be easily accessible to my left hand (maybe more, haven’t played in a while)… if you can manage all of the buttons you need though, go for it.
I haven’t used this, but I’ve played Arma 2 with a wiimote and nunchuck before… it wasn’t a great experience because that game needs even more buttons…
There are two buttons on the back for index and middle finger, and the analog stick on front can be clicked in with your thumb as another button. There are a few more buttons on the face below the analog stick as well (might be useful for changing weapons or checking teammate ult status, etc.), but I think the 3 buttons should be enough for the most part.
So I got the Nav for $3 used at Gamestop, they’re amazingly affordable compared to other options like Razer Tartarus or Orbweaver. I got it working on my gaming laptop using SCPToolkit, it’s pretty simple you just have to download/install the program with all prerequisites, plug Nav controller into a USB, open the SCP Driver installer program, and finally install the PS3 Dualshock driver specifically for the Nav controller as it shows up in the drop down.
So far it works great, it really feels like I get the best of both the console and PC worlds with this setup. Only knocks I’d have against it is that it’s not super comfortable to hold (Sony seriously needs to step up their peripherals ergonomics game), also setting up all the key bindings to my liking between the nav controller and my deathadder took me awhile because of the limited buttons, but I’ve got it at a nice, natural, comfortable spot now. Tracer movement is awesome now on PC.
If anybody tries this and has issues with Hanzo/Mercy/Zen acting weird, make sure the settings option “Force Keyboard/Mouse User Interface” is enabled, it’s a hybrid control scheme support option that stops the game from getting confused about whether to give control to the Nav or your mouse.
How did you bind the keys to the controller? I’ve been using JoyToKey and am hoping to find some software that doesn’t pick up my Navi as a controller. While Overwatch has the option to disable the controller and only accept key/mouse inputs, other games don’t have that option and hitting the trigger on my Navi activates my keybind (jump) and the controller input (grenade) at the same time as well as other things that can be annoying
I’m using SCPToolkit and in Overwatch the Nav is recognized as a controller, not entirely sure if this will work with JoyToKey but here’s how I currently do it. In the Overwatch control settings there are three columns for key bindings, the first 2 are interchangeably for mouse/keyboard while the last column is for controllers. I removed the keyboard/mouse bindings for each command I wanted on the Nav controller by right clicking, and then bound them to Nav buttons by clicking the third column and then pressing the corresponding button on the controller to bind.
So for example if Ability1 is currently bound to LShift as shown in the first column, just right-click on the LShift to remove that keyboard binding, then click on the third column and when it prompts for the controller input simply depress the LB trigger on the Nav controller to register it.
So with this I have the combination of using the Nav controller in my left hand while still being able to register using the mouse bindings in my right hand.
I tried that with win 10 and a ps nav controller. Not enough buttons unless you have a mouse with extras.
I remember having a hard time synching it.
I just wish all other games had the binding options Overwatch does. Picked up Battlefront 2 for $10 and unfortunately it doesn’t have the option to unbind controller inputs or bind controller buttons separately which means both inputs get read.
You could try a xim they let you use about any controller with anything. Don’t know about input lag or anything like that though.
I use a Razer Wolverine TE in my left hand instead of the keyboard, the Nav doesn’t have enough buttons for me.
I’ve been using this setup since the beginning of Overwatch, since before they had the option to “Force Keyboard/Mouse User Interface”.
To those that find there are not enough buttons, you need to use an MMO gaming mouse. There are an additional 12 buttons that I have on my Razer Naga/Logitech G600.
The mapping for the controller is done within overwatch’s controller options. Not within the driver software for the controller. These mappings carry over to other computers that way as they are synced to the Overwatch servers. I would recommend you also map your MMO mouse’s buttons to correspond with Overwatch’s actual buttons as well, it makes it easier to transition computers during tournaments and such.
Any questions, feel free to reach out.
There is no need to purchase XIM. You just need the program reWASD. Make sure you purchase Advance Mapping along with the basic program ($15 for both). Advance Mapping allows you to unmap the keys to the in-game controller so there is no conflict. I know it works with Destiny 2, Star Wars Battlefront 2, and Rocksteady Batman. Actually, I very confident it will work with any game! By the way, if you don’t want to keep remapping for different games, also purchase +4 slots. It’s another $9, but still a lot cheaper than a XIM adapter.
Resurrecting this thread because Black Friday is approaching and reWASD is going to be on sale for extremely cheap, as it is every year. I’ll be switching from SCPToolkit to reWASD myself.
I’ve been using the PS3 navigation controller + Logitech G600 for years. Right when overwatch came out and before the “force keyboard ui” option. Glad they supported it, unfortunately most games don’t.
