Playing at a higher Rank made me play worse at a lower rank

At a higher level I feel everyone was tactical- following tanks, and if 2 or more people died they would all fall back.

In low silver I find myself waiting to group up while people just rush in - we end up losing and I feel like I didn’t contribute as much.

Is this possible? Of course some games but enough to knock me down from from 1900 to 1499

I think it is.

The “right” play in low ranks is usually the “wrong” one and vice versa, simply because of you what you wrote. No tactics, no teamplay, nothing. I cannot remember the amount of times I provided 0 value when positioning like ML7 on Ana, especially when playing Anubis defense, even if I tell it to my team where I will be and how to stay in my los. 80% of such games are met with “position yourself better so you can see us”. None of them actually stopped to think that maybe their positioning was not the right one. So I did, I positioned in a more dangerous spot, got value and did not get punished. So easy to build bad habits in low ranks.

That is why when you see those streamers doing unranked to GM and all of them say “if I would do this at my rank I would be immediately punished and would be labelled as a thrower, and would be reported”. People do not know how to punish in low ranks. I just had a game where the enemy Widow had all the space she can get, only dying 2-3 times in total the whole game and we were playing Lijang, so that was her total death count on both rounds. We were running Winston, Ball. None of them dove her, not once.

Watched the replay, she was not particularly good but when no one is targeting you or countering you, even the worse Widow will hit her shots eventually, and she had all the time in the world to miss as much as she could and to sneak in a 2-3 kills.

High risk, high reward is what gets wins in low ranks.

The play style in all ranks differs so much, things you get away with in say Gold, get punished more often in low Silver, while it’s the correct thing in Diamond.

You have to adjust your play style for the rank your in, to match what your team is doing otherwise you wont get any support, unless you heavily out-skill the enemy team.

I’ve had games where I play Widow, as LichQueen explained perfectly above, where I was left completely uncontested on high ground for over 4 minutes, took my time aiming, and hit most of my shots, got called a cheater because of it, when in reality I had 0 pressure on me causing me to wiff shots or panic fire.

If you play on the NA servers (guessing you do since most here do) feel free to shoot me a request, you said you just switched from console to PC as well, so the play style is even more different. Brett#12316

It’s like how if I play a game of pickup basketball expecting everyone on my team to shoot and play like NBA all stars instead of average Joe’s just playing for exercise I’m going to be disappointed and really never win a game that I wasn’t purely at the mercy of my team, even if I’m the best player on it. In that situation I’d have to take control and when I see something that has to be done, just do it.

The same applies to OW if I’m in a low ranked game I shouldn’t blindly expect my teammates to do something for me, if I see it, I should do it.

That analogy is a little off.

I’ve played in higher ranked games on this account, when I switch to my main to raise it up I fail to do so.

So that’s like playing in the nba then going to a playground. If I played in the nba I’m sure I’d make more shots than others and probably still win. - not so here (to me)

Yes but if you played like the rest of your team was also nba talent you know what you’d also likely do? Pass to them more than you should if you can just make the shot yourself.

That’s the main point I’m making. If you know you’re capable of performing at a higher level and see an opportunity to finish a low target or that something needs to be done, call it out if you want but do it yourself too.

I do not trust anyone on my team ever. I made a mistake, like really, I figured out that it was a mistake, even tho it should not be, of watching way too many VOD reviews and tutorial videos and streamers, and found myself playing so safe on support, afraid to peek even if we got a teamkill. My team was literally 5vs6 because I again provided 0 value, thinking that I am going to get shot from every angle possible, like I was playing against GM’s every time.

Got uses to such a playstyle that I still have troubles with it, and still find myself in such situations, where after I watch my replay saw so many opportunities where I could have gotten both kills on their supports, because the whole enemy team was oblivious to my position, and I did not take it. I get so mad at myself in such situations that it sometimes prevents me from Q-ing up for the next game. Feel ashamed.

Exactly. There’s no right answer if someone asks “how aggressively should I play?” Because the situations will always be different. The big thing people need to realize is that the biggest thing to learn about Overwatch is when and how to adapt to a situation. Like I play Zen a lot as my comfort pick on support but I play him aggressively when I start a match.

Why?

Two main reasons.

  1. It often leads to results when the other team can’t deal with it either due to being surprised, expecting zen to just fall over and passively die when they attack him, or just me being better.

  2. If I need to adapt, whether to a different hero or to a safer play style on zen, it’s a lot easier to make the swap to a slower play style from a faster one than the other way around. Not to mention that it will be easier to recognize faster and get more results if I make the right choice in playing aggressively from the start than playing passively ever would.

I make my opponent either adapt to me or show that I need to adapt to them.

I made this point before:

On a scale of team dependency I feel some people believe you CAN 1v6 (1 from 1 to 10). I feel it’s closer to 7.

I’m not saying 1v6. I’m saying don’t depend on the team to do something just because you call it out or because you tell them to. One of my biggest pet peeves is when a support player (especially in Ana or bap) call out a low target they easily see and can hit, and blame everyone else for not killing them. Why didn’t they just finish off the target themselves if they were already looking at them?

Similar here. I’ve got bad mechanics, so do better at 2k where I can clutch on decent team mates to confirm kills for me.

At bronze I need to get solo kills, which I have trouble with as tank. eg, as Hog can do 180 damage with hook combo, then they get away. In higher rank games a team mate would also target the hooked enemy and kill them.

So I need to polish up my mechanics.

As support, 2 years back, climbed from 1700 to 2550 after a few hours of ffa practice with Lucio. Vs silvers I was going 18-0 and 25-0 in a couple of games.

What ranks are we talking about and what role exactly?

My scrim org has a 4.4 GM team. Whenever they’re recruiting DPS players they look for players who can turn the switch between team player and game carry on/off freely.

My experience is most people (who are not that level of player) have one play style or the other. Understanding the game well enough to have both at your appropriate rank is rare. But does happen.

So this is why adapting is so important. Every single situation (even in the same match) can be totally different. We need to read our enemies actions and act accordingly. And we need to learn the mechanics to do so.

Even say silver teams will be like yeah its time to deal with the rat and they do. Many games can devolve into a game of just kill the carrier basically.

I think the problem for players is even in the dregs now days teams can identify who the problem player is. You need to figure it out quickly that they are on to you and either switch or completely change your style of play.

The truth this overwatch is not really a carry game. If you are really carrying a game you are outskilling the bracket you are by at least 500 SR or you have teammates that are enabling you to do your work.

I’ve been reported for waiting for a regroup.
Idiots keep peaking and giving free ult charge and dying, and they think I’m afk waiting for a 6 stack to push.

silver and gold is just a cesspit rank. to get out you need to play 1 game a day, because they always seem to put some effort in to matchmaking your first game of the day in the hope you will stick around so you should win it, but dont get fooled into gambling your sr away, take the booty and run. you can abuse this and farm enough wins to get you to plat where the game becomes more playable and less a complete joke.
i did it on an old account and got huge winstreaks, but before if i tried playing normally i would never get winstreaks, just wins and forced losses.

lmao…

I’ve had that happen to me a few times too. All of a sudden someone says to everyone I’m afk/throwing.
