Placement Problems

I have two accounts, this one and a new account I bought recently.

I did my placements on this account and finished in Platinum (2511), which is about where I should be. I’m generally in the high-gold/low-plat skill level because I don’t have the reflexes I had in my younger days.

I wanted to talk about the placement process for my second account. I didn’t throw, I didn’t pick off-meta heroes, I didn’t do anything differently than my main account.

Every game I would get teams with no tanks or no healers (I play mainly tanks and healers). I’d try and pick something to help the team. In many games I’d have 4 or even 5 gold medals, but I lost 8 of 10 placements. I had three games with leavers. In 3/4 of the matches some or most of the team was not in voice chat. My second account finished in mid-silver. (1711)

On my main account I think I won 7 or 8 of 10 and experienced none of this. I am not complaining, but it seems to me that with the same player playing the same heroes, the outcome ought to be somewhat similar if the process is fair. Clearly it’s not, and it makes me wonder if new players are given the worst teammates and artificially are placed lower as a result.

Has anyone discussed this before? What’s the verdict?

I guess you were quite unlucky. You should be able to climb to plat quickly.

If not, please report back. This is gonna be interesting.

Same thing happened to me My main was barely plat at the time made a new account and got 2800.

Pretty sure new accounts base your MMR on your stats in other modes. But you also have the bonus of gaining and losing more SR after you finish your placements. I played a lot of games with my friend who’s in mid plat on this new account and I got placed pretty much exactly where he was. It’s all dependent on who you’re playing against in your matches unfortunately.

Ouch. I bought a 50% off account. The first game I played was a Silver Quick Play game. Everyone stood still. I leveled as a Mercy Main with Orisa as tank when we had healers.
Eventually I went 6-4 in placements and am around 2600 as Orisa Tank.
c0derwatch website ranks my Orisa diamond 3.1k but I placed 2600.

Interestingly I placed in Diamond on competitive CTF on my main account, and low-gold on my alt account, so those numbers are more similar but still not the same. There definitely seems to be an algorithmic bias against new accounts.

Yeah, my friend was placed mid Plat in regular comp and Diamond in CTF as well. There are less people playing CTF too, so maybe that is also skewing the numbers.

Just as a follow up, I didn’t have time to work all the way up to plat before the season ended, but I didn’t have any trouble getting to gold. I think I won 11 or 12 and lost 1 or 2 along the way.

It’s weird how the teams I got after placements were all trying, but the placement matches were so bad. Do you think people purposely throw their placements so they can get some easy wins?
