Ping Spikes to my network ONLY when playing Overwatch

I keep a constant latency check going on my other monitor to keep an eye out for any anomalies. I can sit in any game, activity, or just idle, and my ping stays the same. However, the second I get into a game of Overwatch, I start getting these spikes of up to 800ms, but usually varying around 200-500. The thing is, it’s not just Overwatch that is spiking, my internet connection spikes as well. If I ping Google during the sessions, it shows a spike whenever Overwatch spikes. But outside of that, it’s stable.

I’ll perform any test you’d like, I just want to know why this is happening.

Heya Rorschach,

The first thing I’d want to check on this type of report would be “Quality of Service” settings. This can be either a program on your computer, or a setting on the modem/router. We’ll want to check all devices for these.

Common QOS software for PC:

  • Killer Network
  • SmartByte
  • Alienware Command Center

Note, these are just the 3 most common ones that I’ve seen. There are many many more programs out there that do basically the same thing.

From there, we’d want to check the network devices. Not all routers/modems will have Quality of Service. So we’ll want to just login to the device and verify. If it does not exist it should be safe to assume it’s not there. Just be sure to check through each menu once logged in!

Login info for most routers can be found here.

It’s stopped now, not sure what was causing it. But I don’t use any QOS software.

You started a new thread for this same issue, but you it’s less confusing to keep everything for one player in the same thread. What steps that Kaldraydis provided did you try?

I’m getting the issue again today. Not sure why. I’ve reset my modem/router, my computer, and not running anything that might be using additional bandwidth. I have 100mb/s down and 10mb/s up, so it shouldn’t be an issue. It only happens when in a game in Overwatch.

Rorschach,

If it’s not related to quality of service, there may be something odd going on with your LAN or network hardware. If you’re still having this problem, please create a WinMTR test which catches this problem. You want to restart the test every match until you catch one of these problems. Once you’ve caught one red handed, run the test for about 5 more minutes, export it, then post it here. This will let us look for problems between your PC and our servers which may cause this.

If you have problems with posting it due to a link error, go ahead and copy paste this into your next post, and replace “WinMTR goes here” with your test.

Ok, so I’ve noticed a trend, I’m not entirely sure what is causing it, but it appears to be on my end. What I’ve noticed is that when it does happen, restarting my PC fixes it. And it only seems to happen if I leave my PC on over night and don’t restart. I know, it’s weird, but that is what I’m going with. If I see it again, I’ll run a WinMTR to see where the problem is originating.

Your network adapter may become overloaded after prolonged use if it’s beginning to fail.

So it happened again, and I caught it on the WinMTR. It appears there’s something going on in my network whenever the router reboots and I don’t refresh my connection via restarting my PC.

Yeah, that 519ms response time will surely cause issues. It does sound like the network adapter on your computer might be having issues.

I’m getting random ping spikes as well. It’s only coming from certain servers. My ping will be 30ms, but certain games on the OW servers will be unplayable at 150ms. The games act like they’re running at 1000-3000ms. People running in place, frozen in air, teleporting around, I’m standing still, but will fall off the map.

1 out of 10 Quickplay games are like this.

8 out of 10 custom games are like this.

I haven’t seen the game this bad since the DDoS attacks 3 years ago.

Funny thing is, on KotH maps, the ping will fluctuate between rounds. Some rounds I’m at 150ms, next round is 30ms. From unplayable to playable between rounds. It’s a roll of the dice.

Yet, all my other games are running fine.

I’ve changed no settings on my modem or service. So why is this happening? It could be my ISP, but it seems tied to rounds in the game.

Please start a new thread with your WinMTR so someone can take a look. Troubleshooting for multiple people in one thread can cause confusion/missed responses.
