With the current iteration of the perk system, it’s just making the game too annoying to play. Unless you get really lucky with your initial team comp, matches tend to become very lopsided very quickly because people are afraid to swap to something better due to losing their perk progress.
I get that that people don’t like having to swap to counter someone who just countered them, but that IS the entire concept of how Overwatch plays. Counter picking is a core concept of the game.
If we’re going to start with the idea of “Reducing counter picking”, then we need some very important changes to heroes as well, otherwise the balance of the game is drastically changed. For example, D.Va would need to lose her Defense Matrix (since Beam Heroes are the only viable counter). Sigma would need to lose his Vortex since it pairs up against high DPS heroes like Bastion and Muaga. On the DPS side for example, flying Heroes need an armor buff against Hit-Scan heroes.
Of course the simplest solution, rather than buff and nerf every hero in the game drastically, is to simply modify the perk system so that perk progress is retained on swap. I know I know, counter picking.
However the way it stands, by influencing people AGAINST counter picking, we’ve been thrown into a situation in which players are now encouraged to avoid picking to a better composition that may be able to turn the fight into their favor out of fear of losing their perks.
By Blizzard’s own admission, they’ve seen a reduction of 20%+. That’s basically 1 in 5 matches borderline “thrown” because people would rather play into a bad match-up than to counter swap to something better.
Hard Counters still exist, and are built into the core of the game. Sure, if you want to spend 100 hours 1-tricking D.Va to learn how to play her into Zarya, you can argue that she isn’t actually weak to beams afterall.
Your average player however, isn’t doing that.
Right, and are countered by Hit-Scan characters. If we go the route of removing Counter Swapping, or really quite penalizing it, then there has to be compensation given so that you don’t NEED to counter swap against a bad match-up.
In the case of Airborn heroes, Armor helps off set their weakness to hit-scan.
Just doesn’t work, had a game where a doom was bodying my team and I was on hog, i swapped to mauga and farmed him. The doom had all his perks and i had none. If you play mauga right in the neutral and conserve your resources properly doom isn’t doing anything to you.
I still just swap when it’s not working out. For most heroes the perks are not strong enough to the point where it’s not better to swap. Plus you get them much faster the longer the game has gone on. Personally don’t feel like it’s really an issue. Just like losing ult charge isn’t. If you are at say 80%, it’s still often just better to swap than try and get it to use it.
What do you mean?? If you play against a character that counters your own enough, eventually you learn to play around your weakness. its like the whole D.va Zarya argument
