PC players with controller?

I accept the handicap.

Heroes like Illari I struggle with because the controller is not well-equipped for precision shooting for her weapon. I usually crouch to help with aiming. Also, I never play Widowmaker and rarely play Ashe because precision aiming is pretty tough on a controller.

Also, what SidewaysGts said is very accurate.

Over a decade ago I was often playing Counter Strike Source on my PC which was situated in my living room; did you know it had native controller support? I was getting fed up with using a mouse and keyboard without a proper desk so made the switch to a 360 pad and I got fairly decent at it too. Lobbies frequently thought it was a joke at first and then were amazed when it turned out I was indeed using one. I then had to use something called Pinnacle Game Profiler to get controller support in all games (native support was far from common then) and it all snowballed from there. Turns out that you can use pads in all sorts of games and whilst not be the outright best, certainly beat the majority of the playerbase and be competitive.

Arena shooters were one the genres that didn’t lend itself well due to high sensitivity requirements coupled with strafe jumping/advanced movement mechanics and high aim requirements. I was looking into custom trackball controllers and the like but never found anything tangible and kinda gave up. I’d imagine there are more people out there using pads now given they’re supported in more games and PCs being moved away from desks are also more commonplace. Controllers obviously aren’t better but there are reasons why they’re used, including some just enjoying how they feel which is perfectly valid. PC is supposed to be the most custom and open format, using a controller or joystick or whatever device someone wants definitely seems to be in tune with that philosophy.

This reminds me of ppl laughing others for playing fighting games with K&M but now we have Leverless controllers and there are even ppl using real life guitars as controllers in official tournaments.

As long as you are comfortable with it you should play on whatever you want IMO.

100% agree with this…but im calling BS when someone claims its easier

OW was my first shooter on PC, so I used mouse to aim and controller to move around because keyboard commands for a shooter felt weird as hell.

I’ve since moved to every other shooter with keyboard + mouse, but OW I still use controller + mouse. A joystick is a somewhat superior input method because what it takes 2-3 fingers to accomplish for movement you can do with a single thumb on controller.

You lose out on AD strafing spam, but you can some level of more control when aiming. With Tracer you can maintain perfect tracking on Mouse, but do 360 degree blinks instead of limited to the 8 by keyboard unless you give up tracking for a blink.

Welp I mean… if I think A is more comfortable than B of course I am gonna say A is easier. :stuck_out_tongue:
(Thats why I suggested to try it out and see how it goes)

RL friend of mine is one of those console players and he doesn’t use Aim Assist. He says he does better without it and it only messes his aim up.

That could be true for some characters. Some lend themselves well to no aim assist compared to others. I’d personally leave it on for all of them though, I think the overall benefits outweigh the negatives.

Yes and no.

I use a controller for movement and a mouse for aiming, shooting, and abilities.

My controller can’t die though, it’s wired because controllers dying mid-match was stupidly annoying when I was on console.

Using a controller for aiming and shooting on PC is honestly insane and I applaud anyone who manages it well. It was hard enough on console and just about impossible without aim assist on PC.

Dang! Now thats hybrid gaming! :astonished:

I could see it working if you used a Wii controller for movement thou

Keyboard for A D strafing is more impactful than mouse for aiming in overwatch. You can immediately tell controller players because they just take fire like bronze players.

Yeah it’s probably harder to play with AA, but they usually only play controller friendly heroes, for example there is a T500 who play mostly Rein

Console player who has never touched a mouse migrating to PC.

Fixed that for you lol

Hmmmm…former console GM here. A massive one. An absolutely massive one. Game sense on console is different in and of itself because if you’re not facing ximmers you can get away with more. Every console player is more aggressive because you can swing people on console without them being able to flick to your head in a frame. Mechanics aren’t everything in OW but they still matter, and controllers severely limit what you can do. They also force you to play slower because you just can’t turn fast enough.

Oh, and console movement is practically the same as movement in other fps games like Siege because the time it takes to fully move the joystick simulates movement acceleration.

If I use controller, I must be on a console (or playing a steam game that supports it). I won’t use it for overwatch unless I’m in the practice range as well

Better to just flick for the Blink or move to do the Blink while still aiming. Tracer needs no movement acceleration more than almost any other hero.

I play with a Trackball and Keyboard. I’ve used that setup ever since Carpal Tunnel started to wrench standard mouse out of my hands.

It’s not optimal, I’d say it’s better than a controller, but worse than standard keyboard/mouse. The precision isn’t there with a trackball, but you make up for that by having an infinitely large ‘mousepad’. I never have to pick up my mouse and move it back over, all I have to do is keep moving the trackball, where others would have to pick up their mouse. That gives me a .5second advantage so that I can kill 'em when circle strafe dueling lol.

That doesn’t necessarily apply in Overwatch so much as other games, but it’s still a consideration.

I’ve got a few friends that I play with regularly who use gamepad on PC, and they do a decent job. You can definitely tell they’re using a gamepad though, the movements are robotic.

Ball players do cause analog movement is super smooth to control rollouts, i guess it applies to some extent of he plays winton mainly.

Could also be a console peasant who can’t handle a advanced precision tool like mouse of the pc master race :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

If you use it in the optimal way, the claw grip apparently, its really accurate but it destroys your tendons. Welcome to carpal tunnel lol
