For anyone like me knowing we don’t always get matched with people that are from a similar rank/SR, Activision has a patent allowing matching with people based on their own microtransactions on top of the SR.
For instance, the system may match a more expert/marquee player with a junior player to encourage the junior player to make game-related purchases of items possessed/used by the marquee player.

This also explains why they are now hiding SR. You can’t see the rank of the people you are matched with anymore. Very convenient for them.
WP, I really didn’t think it would be that bad but here we are.

I’m never surprised by anything this company does anymore…it’s Blizzard…when you think they can’t go lower…they will find a way to go lower…

If I am not mistaken its around since 2014… so yeah… I am sure they use it know ^^
some conspiracy theorists saying new players with no skins are getting put with veterans and other with many skins as sole reason to push the sales of skins which is not the case

I would add the Elon Musk smoking meme.
“What if … we actually put bots in the game, that dont use VC, have private profiles and have all the BP rewards from the first day and … they were super bad playing?”
Its not the Dunning Kruger effect nope, its a MM that rigs every game I lose, but not every game I win. In those games I 100% carried and it was totally deserved

Is this why I’m seeing witch kiriko’s in my games.
Are they trying to seduce me into buying it

Already debunked, multiple times in fact. (Will dug up proof if requested)

Exactly, they’re matching you with people that own stuff you don’t own on a character you usually play. This way you want to buy stuff and MMR/SR is a secondary matching element.

The patent was made two years before Overwatch debuted, over one year before Overwatch was even begun, and involved an example of someone buying in game cosmetics through microtransactions which you were unable to do in Overwatch until this year.
It really is amazing the lengths some conspiracy guys will go to.

That’s not true, you were always able to buy skins in OW1. You already had microtransactions like this. I believe this has always been in the game but it feels they cranked it up in OW2 thanks to the SR being hidden now. It has always existed but it’s worse now.
It’s not a conspiracy theory, it’s a fact. It’s a tangible patent.
During the last few years (especially with covid), it feels the definition of “conspirationist” has evolved into “lucid person”. But hey, I guess it’s a compliment now.

I mean they do still use it in call of duty. Not sure about overwatch though, i don’t think it was ever used in 1.
Thank goodness OW is my last online game. This sort of patent should never be approved. Srsly why is there no union in gaming industry to moderate this kind of stuff.

- Blizzard was bought by Activation in 2013.
- This patent is from Activision and dates back from 2014.
- OW1 was released in 2016.
I don’t see why they wouldn’t have put it in the game unfortunately. It lines up.

Welcome to the real world. If you expect it to work, you may have abuse things. What to say, this game as a whole is about abusing stuff, starting with rock-paper-scissors concept, ending up with your imagination.
Yeah, that totally explains why I have good matches while spending exactly zero dollars.
So, to have good matches by this patent with good teammates you have to spend zero. Are you sure it’s a good idea?)
