OWL Terminology Explained

So often in the OWL broadcast casters, analysts, and players will use terminology in a way that doesn’t really explain it sometimes. Just because they need to keep the broadcast going and not have to explain everything they say every 5 seconds. So one of the analysts Sideshow is making a series of articles on the OWL website that helps explains these things in detail.

The first article he wrote explains Dive.

It goes into detail about how Dive is usually played and some basic win conditions that most Dive wants to do.

The second article that was written is about the concept of Peel.

It talks about the many forms of Peel in Overwatch. From simple D.Va Defense Matrix to booping a Winston off of your supports. Also the most complex form of Peel, killing the person who is trying to kill the person you don’t want dead.

The next article written was about frontline and backline.

This talks about the difference between the 2 and how these individual parts can sometimes mix and how they can split.

After that explaining Poke was next.

It explains that poke is when a few long range heroes take a far away defensive position and put damage down a specific choke point. Usually heroes like Soldier and Zen are the best at this.

Next up on the list was Picks.

Pick is when the heroes that everyone loves to have on your team. Actually do what they are supposed to do. Like Hanzo, Widow, and Hog are the heroes for this.

Next is a topic that everyone knows about in ranked, Stagger.

The article mostly focuses on teams purposefully staggering enemies. Not DPS running in 1v6 like in ranked.

Next is another concept that seems to escape a lot of people in ranked, Ult economy.

The article mentions throwing caution to the wind and using a lot of ults. This is supposed to be the exception not the rule like in ranked.

The next article is about a very complicated and not well understood for most topic, fight momentum.

The article explains how you can use certain ults to force the enemy to die, get out of position, or use valuble ults themselves.
