OWL Team comps are the same

Out of curiosity I just checked a few matches of the OWL playoffs and couldn’t help but notice they all use the same comp, literally. There’s always Winston + Reaper + Sojourn + Lucio and Kiriko, nobody swaps and no team changes even a single hero.

So here we are, “new” game, new format, new heroes new maps but still, boring mirror matchups in OWL. People watch it just for the tokens, at least that’s what the comments shed lights on and I understand.

And you’d thought Blizzard was vaccinated against goats on OW, seems like they never learn

ofc 90% watch it for the tokens… its the only way to unlock skins for free now.

Depends on the patch for how much certain heroes are played. For example stages 2 and 4 had a lot more variety than 1 and 3.

its the same boring mess.

Mirror matches at professional level are inevitable, so I wouldn’t look into that in particular as reflective of the overall gamestate.

However, what’s best in league play right now is also what’s best in casual play, or at least Sojourn and Zarya are anyways. Clearly the gamestate does have issues at the moment.

I like when there is more variety, there has been plenty hero diversity depending on map and what the teams are better at over the years, this season included. It’s fine that you find watching owl boring regardless.

I wonder why they are playing Winston in that comp. Who is he diving? Lol.

Zarya might be a touch better.

the casters are awful, the camera is awful, there is zero exciting moments because everything during the fight happens so fast. i dont play siege anymore and i watch esports and feel more entertained than OWL… its just a mess.

You don’t like it, others do. Nothing more to be said.

I mean, yeah? They are all already familiar with almost all heros and how they work so there is very little experimentally needed.
That happens with basically every competition platform. One thing is somewhat better than others and most competitive people tend to choose that one.

Other team games mirror weapon loadouts.
Same thing.
If you think mirroring is just a owl thing…

True. But mirror matches are also safe. New patch + tournament = mirror match is the best plan.

Not to mention that OWL tends to optimize the heck out of anything so eventually you land on the set of heroes that is optimal. The best we can hope for typically is map dependent comps because X comp is best on map A but Y comp is best on map b.

There is always going to be a “best” and pro players are going to figure out what that is and use it.

After her nerf (which is active in OWL but not for us), she’s apparently not as good.

In ranked, if the enemy tank goes Winston you can just go D.Va who is good against Winston. But doesn’t seem like that is viable either in OWL right now.

There will always be a meta and especally because OWL does not play the same game that we play, those picks do not really reflect how strong characters are for people outside of OWL.

Oh, I did not realize they had that patch live. Thanks for informing me.

I guess it’s a preview for ranked in about a couple of weeks. Not sure why we can’t have the patch since they have the patch already. But we have to wait until Nov 15.

I’m a big fan when the balance is good enough that certain comps are better on certain maps. Or a team is really good at a certain comp that they can still make it work outside of its most ideal circumstances. Oh well. Maybe next years we will be back at that, as I expect these playoffs to be the same comp on every map. But we shall see.

bring back the pirate ship!

Doesn’t mean that because it’s not just an OWL thing that it’s good though

If you see the same comp over and over again at a pro level, it means nothing else can beat it except the same comp, logical indeed. Then what does it say about the balance of the game
