Any person who decides to try OW after watching OWL is going to be disappointed because the expectations that it sets for the gameplay is simply never going to be met.
OWL shows people what OW is meant to be but the reality is that outside of the pro scene, the game is nothing like that. You don’t get people who really want to play as a team, you don’t get decent team comps where people discuss what to do etc. For the most part as a new player you don’t even get a good and fair experience because the people you are going to play with and against are likely going to be smurfs and alts.
You have to somehow hope that people will learn to the version of OW that they didn’t sign up for, for them to continue playing. And honestely, at this point it really only feels like that a person who’d be able to do that would have major issues.

I’m tired of answering this question and seeing it over and over again so here’s what this isn’t about. This isn’t about playing at the same skill level as the professional players, however this is about playing the same game.
Like if you play soccer and you know that there are going to be people playing the necessary positions and for some reason there aren’t going to be 0 goalies or 3 of them. Soccer has different formations as well, you can be defense heavy or offense heavy (like different team comps in OW) but there are always certain positions that needs to be filled.
I mean if anyone picks up ANY game or sport for the first time and expects it to be exactly like how the pros play and to play it exactly like the pros, then that person is extremely naive.
Yeah the title is too click baity mate, sounds like an accusation. Be careful about the way you formulate your OP because you are talking about the new player’s experience and not about OWL actually trying to fool people into buying the game.
I never heard of anyone being excited about OW though OWL. Most new ppl doesn’t even know what is happening on screen without actually trying the game.
Not to mention, is goats even considered the best game experience?
atleast with sports like football, basketball, tennis, etc. rules are followed even in the low “tiered” games, you dont see the goalie suddenly walk out of the field or run into the other and yell “IM A FORWARD NOW”…in overwatch that literally happens. Even if they dont play like the pros, they atleast try to emulate that, OW is not even close in the tier below masters/diamond.
I think the fundamentals of any sport or game you see played professionally would be present even when amateurs play them. If you watch football/soccer you will still see people having different positions assigned, it’s not like there isn’t going to be a goalie because no one wants to be the one doing it.
There is a difference between not playing at the same level as the pros and not even playing the same game. And I’d argue that OWL and the normal OW experience are different enough to not really be considered the same thing.
I disagree.
Considering that OWL is the biggest stream representing OW on twitch I’d assume that it would be the stream that new people would click on if they were interested in OW.
The game can be fun but that is only when you are just starting. Once when you get over the excitement of trying out all the heroes, that is pretty much it.
When is the last time you watched a competitive hockey/basketball/sport where they ended up with people in positions they had no idea how to play or even desire to play them? Or the team just says “nah we don’t need a goalie or defense?”
Would a hockey game be competitive if one team had 6 forwards just “flexing”? While the other team had actually defensemen and a goalie? What if one or two teams ended up pulling out a win playing with 6 forwards - should we now allow for any combination of positions because some people don’t like playing defense or goalie? This is competitive overwatch.
If you ask anyone advice on getting good at a hero they will tell you to play it over and over, don’t swap, just lock in on that hero. If I want to improve at Ashe (random example I’m not a DPS player) how am I supposed to do that constantly flexing to Rectangle man, Lucio or w/e the team needs? The game is designed as if people are robots who will always do what is best for the team, in a game they play in their spare time.
It’s awful design and it’s pathetic it’s stayed static this long.
