OWL being “forced” on us

I saw this statement again today…so now I pose the question that always pops up in my head whenever I see this…

How? I’m genuinely curious why people feel this is the case

sigh

They literally replace event screens with owl, that’s how unimportant the events are and how important owl is to blizz

Have you tried reading those threads? I think they explain it in even more details.

It’s usually not a thread…just a random statement people will make…usually as one of the reasons why they hate the game

I can kind of see people argue that it is being “forced” on us:

  • Balance changes are often made to suit the e-sport
  • From what I understand some cosmetic items can only be received from watching the OWL, and for collectors it can feel like the OWL is then forced upon them.

I don’t really care about the items etc. I don’t like the OWL though, since I get the feeling like the opinions of a few OWL players influence the direction of the game way more than the remaining 40 million players do.

People dont know what they’re talking about. The way some whine about it, its almost as if the game servers are shut down whilst OWL is on.

Did seeing a cigarette ad also force you to smoke? No? Replace event screen with OWL ones didn’t force any OWL stuff on me either.

I mean the influence of overwatch league is defiantly affecting the game. A lot of recent balance changes have been specifically made to put an end to goats which is a meta that doesn’t actually affect a lot of ranks. A good example of this was the reaper buff that did nothing to him in top ranks but made him a monster in lower.

Because the state of the game is less than ideal to some, and OWL takes manpower and resources away from balancing the game in a way those who play it would like.
It has created a sort of “2nd Class Citizen” effect within the community. In an attempt to maximize profit, some feel their needs within the game neglected.

That’s just what I gather though.

TBH I think Jeff and the gang listen to us though it just takes a while lol.

And Jeff/Geoff if you’re reading this, I want to know you are all doing a great job, and please, please spoil us with more anchor tank heroes if you can!

feel like our own biases would play into this…is it for e sport or because the game balance requires it…id love to see all the Esports balance changes that have occured that are in no way shape or form normal changes

and thats by no means forcing anything…i could say blizz is forcing me to pay money to get normal skins because i dont play enough…why arent EVENT skins forced? you can only get them during the events themselves…even the arcade boxes arent “forced”…noone says you HAVE to get 3 arcade boxes during the week…you choose to get them…

I’ve never seen a cigarette ad, I’m pretty sure they’re illegal.

I think the point was how blizzard sees the owl as more important than the events for the game. heck with the lunar new year event they took capture the flag out of the rotation a week into the event. them coving the event with owl is just showing how little they care.

Thing is, how do you differentiate “OWL” from “professional Twitch streamers who are usually in GM”?

Streamers like Ninja and Shroud are drastically important to maintaining audiences for other games.

Hek, Apex paid Ninja a million dollars to streamer their game on launch.

Clearly, Twitch streaming, as a form of highly compelling marketing, is a big deal.

ok…but youre taking that change to specifically be because of OWL…as opposed to being a change to a super weak character that couldve used a buff anyway? Like yeah the META defines OWL…but it OWL does not define the META…it exists outside of OWL as well…maybe not for everyone but it does

Well we will have to go with e-cigarette ads for you youngins then.

It should be no surprise to anyone that OWL is very important to Blizzard. OWL makes them lots of money, not to mention how much media coverage and attention it brings the game, so its a no brainer.

However, replacing event screens with OWL screens doesn’t “force” anything. Are you all of the sudden forced against your will to do something just because you see it on a screen? Is a Blizzard executive at your home pointing a gun at your head forcing you to watch it?

It just feels like they put more time and resources into OWL which can give a feeling that they want us to focus more on OWL than the actual game.

Maybe ignoring balancing and treating playerbase like they don’t exist for over 2 years to get OWL going on is enough for you. Mercy broken for 6 months? Don’t worry we made over 100 skins for OWL to make the watching experience better.

It’s promotion through the actual product you paid for and it’s clear what blizzards priorities are.
