The trailer for the OW2 x WoW crossover has dropped today and I cannot contain how bitterly disappointed I am in it.
This is WoWs 20th anniversary, the biggest MMO to have ever been released deserves more than what we have received. As a fan of both of these franchises I was filled with so much hope and excitement for Blizzard to go in on this. Instead we got 4 skins. 1 of which misses the mark in its entirety (Thrall x Zenyatta) and the other is a recolour (Magni x Torbjorn) Zenyatta shares no resemblance to Thrall in terms of structure, aesthetic or ability and to receive a recolour for Magni is just laughable. You even referenced the fact it’s a recolour in the trailer! By the original Magni just converting into the crystal version.
This was an opportunity for the OW2 team to push the ideas of creative license to the extreme. We could have gotten a myriad of amazing and fully realised ideas but I can’t help but feel we have received a half-baked attempt at a crossover and considering that both of these IPs belong to Blizzard, I am dumbstruck at how we have arrived at such a place.
A lot of fans (myself included) were hoping to see the return of the Illidan and Tyrande skins from many years ago, these 2 were amazing and it’s a shame many of us who didn’t play either IP back then, missed out on the chance to enjoy them.
Judging from various community threads on differing platforms, I am not alone in this. Myself and others have come up with many ideas, which ironically enough would churn out profit beyond belief for OW2 as the games main source of income is cosmetic sales. So why are we getting sub-par cosmetics? Many ideas that fans, including myself, have had include:
Brigitte x Lady Liadrin
Doomfist x Garrosh Hellscream
Mercy x Jaina Proudmoore
Lifeweaver x Malfurion Stormrage
Roadhog x Undead Abomination
Junkrat x Gazlowe
Junker Queen x Drakka
Zarya x Thrall
Kel’thuzad x Rammatra
Lightforged Warframe/Draenei x DVA
Night Elf x Hanzo (similar to the Sindorei x Symmetra released a few seasons ago)
All of these and many more would have been readily available for Blizzard to make and do justice to 2 of it’s highest generating IPs, which is ultimately the main goal, is it not? Instead the fans have received lack lustre skins, and to receive these on the eve of a gigantic 20th anniversary celebration of the largest and most popular game in all of human history is, in a word, disheartening.
There is nothing to be done about it as the skins are to be released after the next weekly reset, but I wanted someone from Blizzard to see that I have supported this company, heftily, for many years now and this is the first time I have been woefully disappointed in content that is released.
