OW2 requires a mobile phone number to play

this isn’t for competitive you numpty, its for the game as a whole

There once was a time where the golden rule on the internet was to never share your personal information. It was valuable and potentially dangerous and was worthy of being protected.

Then the people working to monetise the web realised they could make money from it, and the people in power realised this information could give them more power, so they created an environment that flipped all that on its head.

And here we are.

Are you serious?

$1?

This wouldn’t help anything. You could spend all night just ragging on people, probably get banned 2-3 times by the time the reports piled up and you’d be out 3-4 bucks.

A 16 year old can support that kind of overhead.

If anyone can make an account and the barrier to entry is this low, you’ll have 0 ability to deal with bad actors. They’ll just continue making new accounts.

You really can’t have put any thought into this?

This. Blizzard isn’t running a charity, they’re a business. No point trying to appeal to people without money, that’s the government’s job.

It’s not the cost that makes such a system work, it’s the fact that you have to use a credit card to do it. It uses the credit card instead of a mobile number as the unique identifier.

It’s wild how I pointed out that Overwatch (1, specifically) has had a phone number requirement for years and people are still out here bugging about it like they never heard of the practice before.

You didn’t need a cell phone in 1992

You also had payphones everywhere. Your house had a phone. You were never truly out of reach unless you lived with Ted Kazcynski. Arguing that because you didn’t need one back then (because alternatives existed), you don’t need one now (when there are no realistic alternatives) is possibly the hottest take I’ll see today.

Don’t speak to me of the dark magics. I was there when they were written.

How it works now is subject to change, was my point.

Right, but we’re right back at revalidation. I think this is a key requirement, revalidation on login would be easy too. Especially if you’re jumping into comp.

  1. Access comp
  2. Please accept prompt on phone
  3. Happy gaming

It doesn’t do this now - but this would pretty much chop this “use other people’s phone” crap off at the knees and it wouldn’t affect anyone who’s not in comp.

Will they do something like this? who knows. I certainly would.

It’s a step in the right direction and a whole lot better than nothing. I like to wait for the result before I’m too critical of the implementation. Though I can understand being weary.

It’s almost as though some people would be willing to go as far giving out their SS/ID number as long as it meant not having to own a phone.

most of us typing here have already bought this game, so I don’t see why we need to put a mobile number in if we purchase the game already, our accounts should already be labelled premium and given access without needing a number

Literally no reason why our accounts should have a restriction put on them if we already own Overwatch or made a purchase in the game.

I feel like virtual credit cards would get around this pretty easily, but it’s not something I’ve spent any time looking into.

you know who else already purchased the game? All the smurfs people hate

or how about those prepaid cards you can get at a dollar store, w here its legit like a debit card but not linked to a bank account

No more or less easily than getting an additional mobile number, I’d guess.

There’s not really a perfect solution to this, short of doing what some countries do and requiring you to connect your gaming accounts to your government-issued ID. I personally wouldn’t go for that…

Because the game presently has no integrity. People have a buttload of accounts sitting at different ELO’s for the lols. Forcing mobile numbers now means chopping a bunch of those accounts off at the knees. Without really any effort from the developers aside from implementing a system that should have been in place years ago.

If you have no decent means of identifying players you have no ways of stopping them from acting like garbage. Nothing you have suggested will help Blizzard to remove bad actors from their game.

Roblox does that, but only if you want to confirm your age for the voice chat oop

You gonna walk around with a satellite phone. You must be American XD

That’s some 1984-tier stuff right there.

Genuinely scary.

They’re using this :sunglasses: prob still works after 20 years like a Nokia 3310 lol

I wonder if this would work though just to get OW working, I do have a very ancient motorolla (idk the name) from like 2005 lol which I only kept because I have photos of my brother on it when he was a small

even then, the us doesn’t like using things like driving licenses as actual federal id
