OW2 requires a mobile phone number to play

Taken from the description of the OW2: Watchpoint Pack:

Internet connection, Battle.net® desktop application, and Battle.net® Account required to play. A mobile phone number must be linked to your Battle.net® Account to play Overwatch® 2.

If its MOBILE PHONE, this means virtual phone numbers (ala skype, google call) SHOULD not work (hoping this is true). Guess smurfs/hackers are buying burner phones moving forward.

The Diablo Immortal devs warned us years ago. “Do you guys not have phones?”

Welp, if you don’t, was nice knowing ya

Thanks Blizzard I can now NOT play OW2, I don’t have a mobile phone, never had one, never needed one. Seems I just saved money by now, not buying the new version of a game I enjoyed. Thanks.

If you don’t have a mobile phone (in 2022) then you probably aren’t likely to be paying for the battle pass anyways.

It’s weird because I’ve played the beta with no phone number linked to my alt accounts that got in.

currently it wont let me link a pre paid phone
so that sucks

This is how you (mostly) stop smurfs. Good move, IMHO.

It is good for that, but there needs to be some alternate form of identification for people without a phone. Imagine someone who bought OW1 suddenly being unable to play the game because he doesn’t have a phone, or even just doesn’t want to link his phone to his battle.net account for any reason.

You have a gaming PC or console but don’t have a phone?

Lol

Yeah I posted on this hours ago. Sucks to not be able to play, but not everyone gets everything in life.

Good thing is we cut down on Smurfs.

Lol all you want, I never need one. So why buy something you don’t need.

This. I read the article on the website about what they use mobile numbers for, and they only use it for important account-related things. Whoever you ask shouldn’t get spammed with deals and the like.

I have a phone however its through cricket wireless which is considered a pre-paid phone plan, however that’s not considered valid for blizzard so I guess I don’t get to play OW anymore

Isn’t it to play competitive only?

You know with this I’m curious what the solution would be. Phone numbers are the only thing I can think of that’s unique to most people (in that you usually only have 1) where its not super personal info like a SSID or license number or something.

Nah, anyone can easily access actual SMS services for like, a dollar. This is the laziest method of solving smurfing and cheating in any video game.

No its to play OW2 at all if you don’t own OW1 already. This mainly applies to those who join in as a F2P.

Source, besides a single line quote without much context?

I find it hard to believe they’re going to track who owned OW1 long term and differentiate the accounts to require a mobile number to play any mode. That’s bad business.

From the description on every single platform’s store it reads that line. Its not really out of context. I assume that if you play OW2 you need a number…maybe irrelevant if you have OW1? I dunno now. Like I have an alt where I got OW for super cheap, that account may DOA when OW2 launches and it requires a phone number.

nah, I’d rather not play mental gymnastics to play a game. I’ll just spend my Money elsewhere.

That’s why I asked for source, you quoted it from the purchase of the founders pack and it also says a desktop client of battle.net is required as well, which obviously isn’t relevant to consoles.

If it’s stated elsewhere then maybe it’s so, I don’t know either.
