I use it. And people go nuts, when I use it for a few seconds…
It´s fun…really
I was thinking the same before Beta. I thought “Aw man, how is she going to keep up.”, and then I looked at the new scoreboard, and she would have great healing but 0 damage done, and her DB didn’t add into the equation. So she looked reeeeeeeally bad in comparison to say a Moira who’s combined healing and dps numbers dwarfed Mercy’s.
SO, I tried to see what would happen if I fired off that potato shooter a little more and I found two things…1) she can do a lot more damage, just by filling in those pauses between healing and boosting, by plunking off a few shots here and there across the match. Or sometimes, firing into a thick mass of people if your other support’s healing is doing fine. Again I was just surprised to my dps break the 1k, 2k mark. I’ve never done that in OW1.
2) It seems like I was getting my ult faster as well. Maybe a false observation, but it really seemed that way compared to games where I just healed and boosted. 2,3,4,5 ults in a match when I used my pistol more, and on fire more as well too (not that that means much. The system just seemed happy with it.)
So I don’t think she needs to be able to do both at the same time. She seems perfectly about to keep up with the other supports, (especially if you add in her DB numbers) by using her pistol a little more. That’s my finding anyhoot. Try it.
I feel she needs a faster animation time on the switching of the pistol and staff it needs to be very quick like less then a second
But it’s so clean when u do it, feeling like a discount sorjourn. ga into super jump while landing all ur shots on a ulting genji, it’s a godly feeling
Don’t worry for me ! I know Mercy well and I use pistol when needed. I managed to rank up really high by playing mainly supports before RQ (I didn’t like forced 2-2-2 so I stopped playing Comp on a regular basis). So I have history with Competitive OW.
My point is that she loses way too much time switching weapons on the beta. It wasn’t problematic in a 6 V 6 setup (even though I would have liked that change since almost no hero on Overwatch switches weapons actively except for Mercy) but in that faster paced game, it is.
If the beta is to become the live version of Overwatch, Mercy cannot afford wasting that much time switching weapons when none of the other supports do (the only hero that is close to switching weapons just like Mercy is Baptiste, even though it’s not switching weapons per se, yet switching “shots / clicks”).
It’s not even about getting kills, getting ult charge faster or doing 1k-2k damage on the scoreboard, yet about smoother gameplay in a faster setup (switching from healing to dealing damage quicker).
What you’re bringing up isn’t relevant to the support issues on the beta, in my opinion (no offence), but glad that you enjoy pistoling with Mercy (as you stated you haven’t tried it before OW2).
While it’s true that she’s got a lot of damage, that whole downtime in between weapons is just… innecesary
Still just chatting here…
Ult charging faster is most definitely a good thing, so if it is in fact doing that in OW2, IMHO it is most certainly worth the effort. I’ve no clue how many average ults Mercies are getting in OW2. I’m just here reporting that I’m seeing up to 4-6+ a match, and using my pistol when I can seems to be driving that.
And again, I’m not talking about going battle Mercy, or just worrying about the DPS, or kills up on the board, My job is to boost/heal/rez. I’m merely saying that I’m finding in OW2 those moments where you aren’t healing, and there is no one to boost, then use your pistol. It seems to have more benefit than we as Mercy players are used to in OW1, and it comes with no downsides if used smartly.
And the general audience for the post were those Mercy players like myself that just don’t bother with it in OW1, unless it’s to kill a Widow or something, because the break in healing or boosting is just too detrimental. If done prudently in the beta anyhow, I’m finding it quite useful all around. More so than OW1.
Right now I’m topping heals against 3 other supports, death rate is about 0-2 average per match, damage boosting for 1-2k+, getting resses off 2-7+ per match, so the core play feels solid for me. So sneaking in the pistol shots in those little moments I can, I’m finding more effective than boosting or healing when it’s not doing anything, that’s all.
For me, it’s like a free 1-2k damage that wouldn’t be there otherwise in my normal way of playing, so I thought I would pass the observation along.
Too each their own though right? My thought for the beta is to try new things and see what comes of it.
Personally I’m finding Mercy to be awesome in OW2 (beta). Who knows where she or everyone else will end up. But right now, she’s great fun for this Mercy player. Sorry you’re having issues.
Good luck out there.
