I disabled match text last night, and I cannot express my relief now that it is off.
No more trash talk from the enemy team.
No more trash talk from my team to the other.
No more sarcastic sounding gg’s and gr’s after a one-sided stomp.
No more “gg ez” filter quotes.
I am free, and I have lost nothing.
Matchchat has only one purpose so far as I can tell: toxic trash talk.
I was so tired of reporting abusive chat; so tired of people quickly typing as much garbage as they can before the highlight intro cuts off chat. It’s the only thing I ever had to read in matchchat.
There were good people out there I’m sure, but there is no time to get to know people in OW2, no time to make friends. There is only time for hasty thoughtless malicious jabs at each other at the ends of matches. The best I could hope for was for someone to fire off a “ns” or a “wp” mid-match, which I am happy to sacrifice.
I’ll obviously still need teamchat and voicechat on for callouts and suggestions, but I have sloughed off this meaningless matchchat baggage and I am made better for it.
This is honestly an indictment of Blizzard neutering the social aspects of this game; bring back the LFG system, give us more time at round’s end to rate a good potg, more time to write things longer than “tank diff” or “ezzzzzzzzzz”, and bring back GENERAL CHAT.
Until then, join me on the other side in blissful silence.

I’ve been playing with both match and team chats off for a little over a year now actually. I would recommend turning team chat off too. There aren’t going to be any useful callouts in team chat, despite what you may be worried about. It’s just gonna be people screaming at other people to switch, and late calls like “reaper behind” in a text chat that nobody is paying attention to in a hectic fight (as well they shouldn’t).
I’m not trying to tell you what to do, just a recommendation. I personally have enjoyed the game 100 times more ever since I made the choice to do this. I can just play and not have to have my experience lessened by some 13 year olds flaming each other.

Advice taken, teamchat be next on the chopping block.
Also, I miss going afk on general chat and coming back to some weird stuff to read. I’ve made a few contributions myself.

If only more people here including Blizzard themselves could understand this, but no they point fingers at team chat so the enemy team chat problem continues to happen.

No harm in trying it. I personally find nothing other than voice chat useful, but maybe that’s just me. Worth noting I keep green and purple chats on obviously.
Yes.
Lol to each their own. General chat never really bothered me or anything and those who don’t like it can just turn it off. I don’t really care I guess lol

Barely even see anyone use it now. There is next to no time.
In the end it’s whoever wins the game that says something. They are the ones who rub it in the losers faces. The gg ez filter did nothing and still continues to be worthless.
Personally I am in team voice, match, and team chat. I don’t always chime in but I do listen. If I am on a good team I’ll chime in with call outs and stuff. I just ignore all the negative bs.
I actually like the match chat, the moments when there’s a toxic turd is not often and I have more moments with fun banter in the match chat from both teams.
Also, being able to thank the team for a well done job at the end of the match is imo important. And don’t forget to thank your healers!

You mean the company that literally sponsors Tyler1, doesn’t understand toxicity?
If that’s not pointing out that they don’t care, idk what does.
When you get a a game where everyone has fun banter is always the best. Sadly they don’t happen often for me. I hope I get more games with people like you in it.
I had voice turned off back in Overwatch (unless I was in Comp,) but it took for OW2 for me to turn chat off as well. It was never anything good, so why bother reading it?
I’m well aware of them only caring about those who make them money, but what I don’t get is why they removed enemy chat for heroes of the storm but not this game?
My guess is because there’s an option to mute it, I actually prefer people having options than not. They could default it to off though.
I get worried sometimes if I do that someone is gonna be like “This Doggo guy is saying racist stuff and he’s being mean please report him!” or “Please report Doggo for cheating” and I won’t see it and be able to defend myself and will get falsely banned or something.
People have literally done this to me before and I had to defend myself.
That is something the “just mute them” guys will never understand. They always assume muting protects us when in fact these toxic players will continue to say horrible things that can cause you to lose your account while nothing happens to them. They just don’t get it. The only 100% working way to prevent all toxicity between each teams is to just simply remove it. There’s absolutely no reason to talk to the other side not even for the gg that only comes from the winning team.
