OW2 literally doesnt need to be made

OW2 is what OW would have been if they actually Updated it and cared about its Development.

Can’t turn back now. But at least we apparently will get stuff for OW1 until OW2 is launched, according to the last Dev Update. Speaking of which, hope we will get one this week again.

Im pretty certain that Blizzard forced them to make a sequel. Jeff had to basically beg them compromise with the giant update / expansion that we are getting now so we don’t lose all our progress and players don’t get left behind.

Yeah this is a foregone conclusion at this point… don’t think you’ll come across many who disagree with what you said.

I think publishing a new game based around pve is pretty cool.
Don’t blame the idea, blame the executers.

The lack of content, terrible care of the game and massive direction changes are the fault of the ones making it.

They could have easily delayed the game’s first teaser and work on both things at the same time. Slower job on Ow2 but with the right changes, Overwatch 1 could have been a massive success again, making Overwatch 2 a great surprise for the players rather than ā€œThe last hope for the game is trying to release a second chanceā€

They shouldn’t have paused development. But when OW2 PvP comes out it will be just like you said - basically a huge patch that took too long. The sequel distinction is just semantics.

i agree lol but what is done is done. hope they dont mess this up but i dont have high hopes. overwatch 2 will be big for a bit, maybe a couple of weeks or a month :laughing:

expect the first week to be big as in every known streamer hopping on the bandwagon for a tiny bit then just leaving and never coming back hehe

Exactly. I have the feeling OW2 is getting even less content than if OW1 was managed properly for all this time.

It s business. They need OW2 to make money. No one works for free forever.

And also, they can hardly release new Tank/Sup without breaking the game with current 6v6 format. Game needs a big overhaul. And also PvE

The real question is what happens if Overwatch 2 isn’t a success? Do they just ditch the whole franchise or turn Overwatch 2 into a wasteland like the first is?

Someone needs to get paid.

I would have been much happier without OW2.

If OW was supposed to have been OW2 all this time they should have focused on that.

OW as OW was successful, and was all we needed.
Shame.

I’d take it a step further. I say we are losing even more content with OW2 than we would if they kept building on OW1. The PVE gameplay always could have come years later as another game completely separate from the PVP.

It might even be that we get less than we would have if they would keep on updating in old schedules, like 3 heroes a year isnt it? thats quite some empty spots for that alone.

I mean 5v5 is being made to tackle a lot of core issues in the game, that can’t just be patched out.

Like how tank combo’s kept breaking the game with every new tank, on top of how post balancing for such tanks just tend to feel mediocre of weak in any case were their not in their designated combo’s.

Ontop of the issues pertaining to the lack of a tank player base causing issues in que times for everyone else, partially do to the previous issue.

And honestly OW was kind of going down that modern MMO route were it kind of just fading in obscurity. Even when it was getting patches, partially do to it developing into a different game then what people wanted out of it.

Be it that last bit is also do to the fact that OW attracted alot of people that primarily play MMO/PVE styled games. Or more at the very least more slower tackle titles like you find in MOBA’s.

Which is what the PVE portion of the game was suppose to appeal to.

I mean we are getting an entire PVE down the line, so if your worried about content it’s coming in a second wave here eventually.

Storm Rising PvE was the absolute limit of what the current game can handle in terms of PvE, the engine is just not built for it

So yes they do have to create a whole new thing for it to work.

Whether or not we just suddenly have to download a new 40gb client one day, or they package it as OW2 is a different question

Calling the change a sequel probably has little to nothing to do with addressing the sweeping changes coming to many (if not most) of the heroes and maps as a result of 5v5, nor is it likely in reference to the PVE side of the game when it releases, or referring to the (arguably minor) upgrades being tacked on to the existing game engine.

I do however think there is more than just a marketing gimmick behind the reason for tacking on the number two after the Overwatch name, and that reason very likely has to do with loot boxes. No doubt Blizzard would like to dump the Overwatch loot box model entirely for something more profitable, since they turned into not only a monetary dead end, but one that more countries are looking into tightly regulating or outright banning. Besides wanting to sell PVE side of the game, there should be little doubt Blizzard wants to start charging for seasonal premium content for PVP, like battle passes, and maybe even add in an ever-present cosmetic DLC store that operates much like their wildly successful Call of Duty counterpart.

Yet it is probably not as simple for Blizzard to ā€œupdate the EULAā€ of Overwatch 1 to reflect the new changes that are likely coming to how DLC is sold in Overwatch 2 and expect to be able to carry on doing business as usual in every country that the first game was sold in, as the contents contained within license agreements—and the changes made to them—historically haven’t always held up in every court when challenged.

I want to say the purpose of Overwatch 2 is to create a legal excuse by calling the game a sequel, declaring it to be an entirely new product. By creating a new product, rather than releasing ā€œjust another patchā€ to the existing game probably gives Blizzard a clean slate, potentially allowing them to avoid legal complications that probably exist in some places that hinder what (and how) they can market to younger age demographics and how they can sell their DLC from a product that was previously sold where the consumer had already agreed upon the original DLC business model (e.g., consumer protection laws, laws involving age and parent consent).

Perhaps it is easier for Blizzard to argue that they shut down the previous live service game, Overwatch 1, and then offered to ā€œfreely port overā€ the old accounts for players into their newest live service game, the sequel called Overwatch 2, but only for players that agree and abide to an entirely new license agreement that is otherwise ā€œin no way relatedā€ to the previous game.
