[OW2] How to automate Tank Balance

Sounds like a daunting task huh?
When it’s actually pretty easy when you consider two things:

  1. Tanks are usually the determining factor in what kinds of metas can be run.
  2. The largest determining factor on winrates for a hero is their healthpool.

Now for a technical math trick, let’s assume they lower armor damage reduction, from 30% to 27.25%. Yes, it’s not a round number, but it makes this all a lot simpler. This way they can use armor to scale healthpools by 12.5hp increments.

  • 25hp
  • 37.5hp
    • 25armor = 12.5hp + 25hp
  • 50hp
  • 62.5hp
    • 25hp + 25armor = 12.5hp + 50hp
  • 75hp

Then from there, here’s the idea:

Dynamic Tank Healthpools

  • Once per per week, adjust each Tank’s healthpool by 12.5hp increments relative to their winrates in GrandMasters

Boom. Now the vast majority of the meta tier Tank balancing is on autopilot.

Which also means the variety of meta options is also largely on autopilot.

Which means the devs can focus on making the game Fun, instead of putting a ton of effort into making the game Balanced.

While kind of true in your assessment having that much seemingly random (To the end user) changes would not feel good to many players and would really mess up Scrims and other competitive play that are not locked onto a patch snapshot if every week you logged in to a new meta based solely on what tanks got an HP change.

To be fair, if they do this right, there won’t be a huge gap between Tanks.
