So upon the news of the Overwatch 2 Beta being only available on Pc, most players will be looking to try it out on their own computers. But this raises a question due to the fact there are mostly two big computer companies using either the Microsoft base chip or apple’s new M1 chip. My question is will overwatch 2 be accessible on both Microsoft and apple chip based pcs’ or will it be like Overwatch 1 and k my for Microsoft chip based pcs’?
Q. Will Mac users be able to participate in the beta?
A. We’re developing Overwatch for Windows-based PCs only, so a Mac-specific beta will not be provided.
This…
apple restricts alot on what can be on mac os and plus for it to work on a mac system the game would be to be recoded for whatever arm variant apple is using these days and plus the gpu and the processor i think arent redesigned for games
Time to learn how to dualboot.
wait for ow mobile and try again with the mobile version…
i wouldn’t put the blame on blizzard for this.
Apple have made it extra difficult by also not supporting the industry-standard graphics APIs on macOS and instead forcing everyone to use their proprietary Metal API too. So yeah, blame Apple. And don’t buy an Apple Silicon computer expecting to game on it
Because M1 utilizes metal better than any other API.
If there’s OW2 Mobile it could be easily ported from iPhones to M1 Macs because they’re both on ARM.
While the question was answered about it. PC with the hardware requirements and using Windows compatible versions of it, Just highlighting isn’t microsoft chip thing exactly. But software based plataform.
Both vendors used the same “x86” arch for several years but the operating system side of it limited the availability about software.
Also, because historically apple makes difficulty to work on their plataform to release software on it, it’s really unlikely to happen, unless they make a mobile version of it.
The fundamental difference it’s how the code software is handled on those plataforms, how easy to implement and the support provided to it. They done some improvements on the first 2. But the later are, often, bad on apple plataforms in general.
Most likely, the issue isn’t related to the chip difference, that can play a factor at least for “launch” or “beta”. About viable plataform are more related to the cost associated with support of it and maybe playerbase size, than something else.
The beta will not be released with mac support, as mentioned previously.
As far i’m aware, their current tools do not support creating games for apple based operating systems.
Could be wrong though, at the very least this isn’t their priority but we could be seeing it later.
This is Apple marketing spin. They could’ve chosen to offer native Vulkan support in their OS which would’ve been way friendlier to developers and it would have worked just as well with their hardware.
Every decision Apple makes is about platform lock-in.
Unless they are making a 1 to 1 mobile version, they will not port Overwatch to the arm architecture so a few mac fans can play it.
Exactly. I hate when Apple users get mad when people don’t play by Apple’s stupid rules. Be mad at Apple.
Overwatch was already ported to arm architecture, the nintendo switch port. Maybe the factors the game isnt ported is because they cant be bothered to port it to mac and that the nintendo port was handled by an outsourced studio.
