Firstly I’d like to say the frame rate drops still need to be fixed since they got screwed up by the Patchimari update 9 months ago. Also, MH is a pain to play when you join a match that has already started as it takes about 15 seconds give or take for all heroes in the match to load in, including yours. Can’t count how many times I’ve died because I got killed by an enemy I couldn’t hear or see. That reminds me. If not being able to see your enemies when you load in was bad enough, you also can’t hear anything except the music in the background.
Honestly, if this is how the Switch version is going to run, Blizzard should either fix the issues with it so it can play close to par with the other consoles or they should just shut it down entirely since it’s obvious with how this version has been treated from its release that they didn’t care about it. It hurts even more knowing that Blizzard creates great games and they have made great ports for those games, but OW isn’t even considered when listing good fps games to play on Switch. Paladins, that buggy mess of a game, is considered a better hero shooter for the switch than this game.
I used to love this game, but this version has so many issues that hurt the gameplay (especially considering we play against consoles that don’t have these issues), it just becomes a painful and unenjoyable experience. Mostly I play to get event skins and then quit to play other games, but if these issues were fixed, the quality of this port would improve by a lot and I would probably play more.
Yes. It could easily stay at the 30 fps it was designed for. Now it mostly runs at 15 fps in team fights or while any map or hero that uses lots of particle effects are active. For some reason, that Patchimari update increased the amount of particle effects in the game and now the Switch can’t handle it.
If it helps, the Switch can handle 1080p at 60 fps while docked. OW runs at 30 fps at 900p docked.
Not all games are created equal though. The Switch can run some dinky Mario game at those specs, but it will always fall behind the much more powerful consoles when it comes to games like OW that put immense load on the GPU. Isn’t OW on the Switch already bare bones? Like didn’t they strip it down as much as they could just to even get it to run at 30fps? Not sure how much more they can strip off. And have you tried reinstalling it? Clearing cache etc? Plenty of space on drive?
OW on switch used to go at 30 fps very solid and the characters looked good, now the game goes to less fps and the characters have reduced the details a lot.
Yes it is already stripped down a lot and yes, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it because that is what Blizzard said to do and it still didn’t fix the problem. The only thing that seems to cause this issue are the particle effects (which those need to be reduced anyways because of all the clutter). This is the main reason behind said fps drops as it only happens on certain maps and/or with certain heroes being active (the ones that use particle effects such as Mei and Symm). Also, as I said before, the frame drop issues happened after the Patchimari update. (As you might remember, that was the huge update that took forever to download.)
You know that Breath of the Wild is also 30fps while docked? and so many other games too.
I did know this. Also the Skyward Sword HD remake runs at 1080p at 60 fps. That statement was more for giving an idea of what the Switch can handle versus how OW currently runs on it.
As someone who also owns the game on Switch, yeah I can safely say Roadhog’s Pachimari Event killed the game for me on that platform. It was still fun and had minor issues but it was still Overwatch and it was still enjoyable (well, as enjoyable as Overwatch gets…)
But now that team fights force it to run at a measly 17 fps the game just can’t keep up, especially now when matched with Xbox and PlayStation players due to crossplay. Switch was released and immediately became the platform nobody cared about, devs included.
Us Switch players even had a whole bug/technical report topic dedicated to this issue, but after 4 months of nothing being fixed, we just gave up and assumed that OW on Switch would just be an example of what happens when you create a bad port of a once good game.
Honestly, if the rumors of them creating a mobile port of this game are true, I believe that it will start out as a solid port of the game, but eventually they will release an update that will make it unplayable, just like with what happened with Switch OW.
It used to run at 900p at 30 fps before the Patchimari update and it was pretty smooth at that. Now it barely stays at 20. Unless you were someone who got the game on Switch after the Patchimari update came out, you would know that this version runs poorly now compared to how it used to run.
Actually the HD version is on Switch, so it is a valid point. I will say it doesn’t have as much detail as Breath of the Wild, but it still uses the Switch’s capabilities to their fullest.
So sorry to hear about the issues on switch. I’m still waiting for Blizzard to push the gameplay resolution of Overwatch on PS4 Pro beyond 1080p
But with that said, the issues on switch are clearly very serious and it’s quite shocking that it hasn’t been addressed. It has already been stated that OW2 will be a more demanding title, and that certain compromises will need to be made on switch specifically.
So if you factor in the already poor performance of the switch port, with the supposed more demanding nature of OW2, that’ll make anyone nervous
I would beg to differ. The Switch port was good at one point, it just isn’t any more because of the issues stated. Also, the Fortnite Switch port started off horribly bad, but last I played it was pretty good. I will agree that Apex looks like hot garbage on switch, but last I played it ran smoother than OW did. I don’t play either Apex or Fortnite anymore though so do take my opinions with a grain of salt.
I would also like to say that everybody knows what the frame rates and graphics are like on the Switch and how it isn’t as powerful as any of the other consoles. That still isn’t an excuse to create a port that runs like crap, especially if you’re planning on making your game cross platform enabled.
I partially agree that they should have never released the Switch port, but only because they haven’t fixed part of the issues that were present in it before or after that Patchimari update released (the sound and sight issues mentioned above were there before said update came out).
Actually they had been addressed, but all that was said were they couldn’t recreate the issues consistently on their end, which means they can’t fix it.
With two less tanks on the field it should reduce the amount of particle effects (which I believe to be the sole reason why these frame drops happen). Has Blizzard made any mention of reducing the overall amount of particle effects (aside from removing one tank from each team)?
