"OW is primarily a FPS"

2/3 of the heroes in every match are tanks and supports. Tanks and supports do not concentrate on FPS things, they have abilities that act as their primary way of interacting with the game.

Of the remaining 1/3, DPS, there exists heroes like Symmetra, Sombra, Torbjorn, Doomfist, Genji, etc. They too do not do FPS things.

OW is not a FPS first and foremost. One might be mistaken it is considering it has several hit scan heroes. The hit scan heroes are a minority sub category even among DPS. OW is a majority ability based game. It just takes place in first person.

Overwatch is an FPS, yes. But more imporantly, it is a specific type of FPS. It’s a class-based, objective-based arena shooter - a spiritual descendent of Quake Team Fortress, Team Fortress Classic and Team Fortress 2.

All the supposed ‘non-FPS’ things you mentioned are literal staples of this particular FPS subgenre. Overwatch wouldn’t make sense without them.

To be fair, around half of the tanks/supports have FPSy guns or abilities.

I didnt realize that literally none of the tanks and supports in this game played in first person nor had guns that shoot things

They are a minority party in their respective roles for all categories.

idk why people think people shooting with guns that aren’t copy pasted from CoD means a game isn’t an FPS.

I guess TF2 isn’t an FPS game because spy can backstab oneshot, or engineer can place turrets, etc.

TF2 has very limited abilities, in OW almost every hero has at least 2.

Overwatch has more in common with TF2 (FPS), Apex Legends (FPS), and CSGO (FPS) than it does Heroes of the Storm (MOBA) or League (MOBA).

It’s a FPS title, and the abilities are unevenly balanced so that some of them are busted and some of them are arguably useless unless you like dying or throwing.

Name em than. I played TF2 for years, it has barely any and saying its similar to OW is being dishonest.

You can change people’s entire playstyles with equips. You can turn demoman from Junkrat into a run-down melee character.

Very FPS!

Almost all the heroes in OW have a gun of some sort.

Tanks who have guns: All but Sigma and Reinhardt
DPS who have guns: All but Genji, Hanzo, and Doomfist
Supports: All but Moira, Brigitte, and Zenyatta

And of those about half of them shoot, just not with a gun.

That’s one. OW its almost its entire cast.

That’s just one example of non fps elements.

You listed torb because he has a turret, which is definitely in tf2.
Spy has invisibility, oneshot backstabs, and an ability dedicated to hacking turrets.
Medic has a healing beam and the ability to make someone actually invincible.
Pyro is far from a traditional “shooter” as he runs around with a flamethrower.

The game is still an FPS however and you’d look like a clown if you went to that community and tried to say otherwise. Wish the OW community was as dedicated.

Spy invis, Sapper, Oneshot Backstab, Dead Ringer
Engi’s Turret, Dispenser, Teleporter, that one wrench teleport thingy
Scout’s multijumps, drinkable items
Afiak CoD doesn’t have you eating sandwiches, sorry Heavy
Medic’s Übercharge (and Übercharge variants)
Etc etc.

  • Half of the Scout’s secondary unlocks + the Sandman (and others)
  • Half the Soldier’s secondary unlocks
  • The Pyro’s Phlogistinator and gas canister
  • Demoknight
  • Gunsliger Engineer is basically Torbjorn
  • The Medic’s Ubercharge mechanic in its entirity
  • The Spy’s Disguise and Cloak mechanics in their entirity - clearly the inspiration for Sombra
  • Sniper’s Jarate - clearly the inspiration for Ana’s Biotic Grenade
  • Heavy’s Sandvich - clearly the inspiration for Roadhog’s Take-a-Breather ability

There, just a sample of ‘ability’-like things in TF2. Every single class has at least one thing.

OP has a point though - TF2 isn’t an FPS, it’s a war-themed hat simulator.

My favorite is how you can turn the scout into a support with the Sandman and Mad milk, slowing down targets and allowing your team to heal from shooting an enemy.

If only I could play the bastard without dying. If I get one kill before dying, I feel like I moved a mountain.

I believe OW is an FPS as it is played in first person and it would also be classified as a shooter. However I believe it exceeded past TF2 on the spectrum towards more ability based instead of aim based.

TF2 is the only remotely close comparison there. The other two are VASTLY different styles of games with only a slight few common factors.

You could easily argue Storm (MOBA) or League (MOBA) share just as much in common as the latter two with how ability/ultimate focused OW is.

The ONLY game that I know of that is really comparable to OW playstyle is Paladins from what I understand, although I have not played it myself.

It’s really it’s own genre… “ability based shooter” or something like that.

Exactly.

This isn’t CoD. This is Overwatch.

And the op’s missing some other things anyway. Like, the only characters with no gun I can recall easily is Rein, Brig, Sigma, and Moira. Even your friendly neighborhood medic has a gun and your friendly neighborhood engineer has a gun that shoots heavy molten rivets (good luck to the skull of anyone hit by that thing).

And… I don’t get how abilities go against the nature of shooters/fpses in the first place. Some old dude who isn’t your father shot some missiles, so what?
Your medic just increased your damage. Anti-shooter how?
McCree just fanned the hammer. 0 way that is directly against shooting.
