Nah the player base was never split because of it. Open queue isn’t popular at all. Why? Because people hated GOATS and still hate it.
They added role queue back in 2019… That’s not a ‘long time’. Winning Game of the Year doesn’t mean the game was thriving either. Yes it was popular, but people were complaining non-stop about GOATS and the format back then as well. That’s the reason they implemented role queue in the first place.
Overwatch reached its peak when they introduced role queue. That’s when it truly thrived and it did so for 4 years until OW2 released.
Super tanks but also just people having normal HP again and actually DYING is just… god, the HP buff patch they did in OW2 utterly destroyed this game if you ask me.
Then we add what they did to the Tank role and put that with 6V6… that’s what we are waiting for… how do we use Ram, JQ, New Orisa and New Doomfist in 6V6
It’s cause it was not the main mode and not balanced for it.
Like I know why you like 2-2-2 it gives you the security of a basic vanilla comp cause we don’t communicate, we don’t use vc , we will be toxic to teammates and still want thai security and blizzard cattered to it instead of giving a clan system better lfg and let people sort it out
The point is its not sustainable in the long run and killed the game.
Rq 2-2-2 will never be sustainable
Rq will always kill the game over long run
Oq or hybrid q is the only way forward regardless of 6v5
There was only a 6 month gap til roleless queue returned
Roleless queue has been around a lot longer than 222 and 122 combined
By itself, no…its just part of the picture of a game that was thriving under roleless queue for a long time
Some people? Yes
GOATS was never a oroblem in the game per se
It was a problem only in OWL, where constant GOATS vs GOATS matches resulted in lower ticket sales
Most players never knew GOATS existed, and those few who did dod not generally have the communication and or coordination to pull it off
So again, no

222/122 was inflicted upon us all because selfish dps players (the majority of the playerbase) demanded that someone…but not them…play tank and support roles.
Excessive queue times caused entirely by 222 drove many players away frombthe game. The opposite of thriving. It worked so poorly that they offerred bribes to get players to fill the artificially created shortages at tank and support. Ultimately, 222 was an abject failure and was a abandoned by Blizzard as such
and broken supports and bring back flashbang CC and keep role queue and DELETE Sigma
Literally just put the dps passive back to 20% against tanks, remove headshot reduction and 5v5 is fixed for the most part besides Cringema shield, Rein shield, primal rage buff
While i dont agree that any of that will fix anything whatsoever, id rather the devs time be spent on what i see as the far better arrangement of the two, ie 6v6
Tanks designed for 5v5 are gonna get rolled by defense matrix, Zarya bubble. Hog, Ball are gonna be useless throw picks in 6v6 against tank synergy. Sigma is completely broken as a 2nd tank.
Queue times will be garbage, if you do a limit 1 triple tank or triple support will be broken as hell.
RQ became the main mode people played after they added it, because OQ was unbalanced and not fun to play, period.
6v6 didn’t kill the game. The game was more popular after they added RQ, far more popular.
The last 3 years of OW1 was the best it had ever been.
No, 5v5 killed the game. That’s pretty evident from how many people quit the game when they introduced the 5v5 format, not to mention the metacritic score for it at 1.7, which is extremely low compared to the 6.5 for OW1.
It’s not. Let’s not start a debate you’re gonna end up losing.
3 years vs 4 years. What’s longer? During the last 3 years, the game was in the best state it had ever been in if we ignore the content drought.
You do know that the game of the year award isn’t given by players, right? It’s given by gaming ‘journalists’.
No. Most people were in fact complaining about goats. It’s why they introduced role queue in the first place.
No, it wasn’t…
Literally everyone knew it existed because it was the most played comp at any elo.
It was.
Wrong again. Better get your memories sorted out a bit there. They seem to be all over the place.
They introduced RQ because of GOATS, because it made the game unfun and unenjoyable to play for the majority of players, especially in lower ranks, and it got worse the higher up you climbed.
I’d love for you to provide an actual source that talk about Blizzard offering bribes to players…
OQ was the failure because once they introduced RQ, the majority of players quit playing OQ. That’s just a fact. If it ‘thrived’ they wouldn’t bother releasing OW2 with RQ at all.
That killed the game , ruined dbalance ate one tanks , ruined possible diversity in other roles
Anyone thinking that rq 2-2-2 is ever going to be a possibility is not being realistic
5v5 while the same problem atleast did its part of a defibrillator reviving the population for a bit now we fix it by removing rq or its going to go down again.
Though atleast in 5v5 it will take a long time 6v6 rq has zero chance of long term sustainability.
Oq with hybrid rules is the only true solution that will atleast solve most issues.
Yeah I have but Genji and Tracer are also insanely strong so the counterplay feels fine in this mode. She is still extremely broken in classic but I don’t feel rage like I do in the regular game. Also mass rez being up like every 30 seconds so if she gets a multikill you can just reverse it
Dive dps have actual staying power in backlines because backlines don’t even exist in classic lol
Anyway, for me it’s not so much about the tanks themselves not being crazy. Hog and Zarya feel perfectly capable, at worst. Zarya’s shield HP actually matters in this mode because it’s an out of combat 30 HPS heal.
I think the state of healing is the real breath of fresh air here. If a feeder takes a lot of damage, it’s not trivial to top them up at all. Lucio has to blow a cooldown, Zen has 30 HPS, Mercy has 50 HPS. Compare that to now. Even if a tank has the DPS passive on them, the likes of Juno or Ana are doing ~80 HPS with their primary fire. A squishy with the DPS passive and that goes down to what, ~70 HPS. Yeah. Classic feels much better in this regard.
Although stated as a fact, this is an opinion. An opinion that many players disagree with, myself included
Role-less queue is by far my preferred mode, as I find the march quality to generally be far better than that found in 222/122
also, fun is subjective. I can see where you personally might not find role-less queue to be fun, but that does not make it a fact, as is claimed here
the excessive queue times and the absence of flex play that was inflicted upon the game when 222 infected the game resulted in people leaving in droves.
222 is a well established failure, and Overwatch rightfully abandoned it
For me, role-less queue 6v6 was and still is the best period of time for OW
role-less queue has been in OW for all but 6 months of its existence
thats a long time
yep, and this was given out when OW was at its peak…6v6 role-less queue, well prior to 222 being forced upon all of us whether we wanted it or not

first, most people weren’t even aware that GOATS existed.
second, those that complained were largely not players, but rather ticket buyers

222 was added to placate selfish dps players, who happen to make up a majority of the playerbase (their customers) demanded that someone play tank and support roles…someone other than themselves
and ergo, the change I consider to be THE worst ever for OW came about
Ticket sales slumped when the audience watched GOATS vs GOATS matches over and over and over.
so yes, it was a HUGE problem for OWL
not at all
it was played in OWL and by some very high level players
the vast majority of the players didnt even know GOATS existed, and of those who did, very few had the coordination and/or communication skills to pull it off

my memories are 100% correct regarding what happened and why it happened
not at all…Ive already covered this
not at all
first off, the majority of players didnt even know GOATS existed
second, it is simply one of many possible team compositions in the game as it was intended to be played, and ergo, fun to play
lower ranks did not generally know of GOATS, and again, those who did rarely had the communication and/or coordination skills to pull it off
the bribes were onscreen, shown on the screen where you selected what role you wished to play.

Role-less queue has never been a failure
It is also the first and only mode to be restored the the game due to popular demand
not at all
when 222 infected the game, role-less queue was removed
I now understand why they removed it. It’s so McCheese that you can just toss it over a shield. If the Cassidy had to actually time it or land it, it would be one thing. They should have given him pocket sand instead…
